Invalid Drive: F:\

I'm trying to upgrade to a more recent version of itunes but when I open the installer I get the error message

'Invalid Drive: F:\'

I have an external drive which is drive 'G', but no 'F'. Tried upgrading with my ipod connected, thinking this might be drive 'F' but still no go.

I've not had this problem before when upgrading.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Question: Where is the iTunesSetup.exe file that you're running? Do you save it locallly to your computer? (Which I recommend -- don't click run when you get the Internet Explorer dialog, click save, and run it locally from hard drive.) I've seen some interesting problems with this kind of error message if you're not running iTunesSetup.exe from the C: drive.

If that doesn't help, why doesn't someone collect an installer log and send it to those lazy Apple engineers?

1. Open a commnd prompt window. (Start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return.)

2. Drag and drop iTunesSetup.exe onto the window so that the full pathname of the file is at the command line prompt.

3. Type in a space, then the following line:

/l*v C:\log.txt

4. Hit return.

5. The installer will create a log file:

C:\log.txt

You need to send that file to our buddy Roy. Make sure that you include:

(1) the log.txt file.
(2) the link to this thread.
(3) a one line description of your problem, i.e. "Invalid drive message from installer".
(4) the username that you're using here in the discussion boards.

Roy is getting a little swamped with messages and needs to make sure he gets all the information. And if he doesn't get that information, the message is just going to get dropped on the floor.

I want you to get the error message again, sneakymartin. 🙂 The log should give more detailed information about what file it's trying to open on this mystery drive and that's what I'm looking for. Just run the installer again all the way through and send Roy the installer log.

Trust me, it's all good. 🙂

I installed iTunes 7.1.1.5 on a 120 GB Western Digital "Passport" external USB drive (Drive L) along with other files. Everything worked with this system, including CD burning of my playlists.

When the Passport filled up, I bought a 500 GB Western Digital "My Book" external USB drive and moved the music library to this (Drive I). Everything works well except that I can no longer burn CDs of my playlists. I get an error message saying my disk burner or software cannot be found.

I thought I would upgrade to a newer version of iTunes to remedy this. However, when I attempted to upgrade, I get an "invalid L:/drive" message, although I have disconnected the Passport L drive. Can you help me with this?

Peter,

You're running Vista. So, you need a couple extra steps. When you launch the CMD Prompt application, you need to right click on it and select "run as administrator". Then you need to type in the path rather than drag dropping. If you have your iTuneSetup.exe on your desktop, type in:

C:\Users\<username>\Desktop\iTunesSetup.exe /l*v C:\log.txt

That will have the same effect as drag dropping on XP.

Peter,

I believe that if you manually uninstall iTunes and Quicktime from the Programs and Features control panel, reboot. And maybe even run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility to make sure all the pieces of iTunes and Quicktime are gone.

Good instructions for this are in the kb article, Troubleshooting iTunes and iPod Software installation on Windows

Then reinstall iTunes, I believe you should be good to go.
