Adobe photoshop elements won't download updates

I recently installed adobe photoshop elements on my MacBook. Whenever I open the application, it automatically tries to update. I get this dialog box.
An error occured while attempting to download a file from the adobe online web server. The request was not understood by the server HTTP #400 Bad request.

Not only can it not download updates, it freezes my whole machine and I have to force a manual shut down by pressing on the power button for 5 seconds. In short, I can only use Photoshop Elements when I am not connected to the web.

I've also had trouble downloading Adobe Reader for pdf documents. I have no trouble on my PC. This seems very strange since Mac and Adobe are good friends.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Hi famo-sa,

adobe and apple are truly good friend, but it also depend on what version of both that try to communicate each other.

First, 400 bad request is happen more because of browser send something that other end server cannot understand, for that, you can try to disable automatic update check on element and try to find updater using other browser.

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=40&platform=Macintosh

And maybe since the elements is not universal yet, failed to do the update make your intel mac crash.
Try to repair permission: application folder > utilities folder > disk utility > repair permission.

and try to download reader from here:

Good Luck.

Is this Elements 2? Quit PE, take the computer totally offline (turn off airport, whatever) then go to Preferences>Adobe Online and set Check for Updates to Never.

EDIT this problem has nothing to do with processor; Adobe evidently shut down the update server (there never has been an update in 5 years) and the program hangs trying to contact it.

Yes, I do have Elements 2 and when I disconnected it from the Internet and chose never update, it solved the problem. I can use Elements when I'm online without freezing my machine. Just think for all these years I thought my Photoshop Elements was updating. I felt so actualized and to find out now that it was all a sham. Some dreams die hard.
