Unable to send email via sbcglobal.net email account on IPhone

Hello there,

Bear with me...here is the nightmare I've had for the last two days with my new Iphone.

I tried setting up my sbcglobal.net email address on the phone and was successful using the "username@sbcglobal.net@yahoo.com" tweak I found on other forums. When I accessed my mailbox that way, I could see all of the same folders I see when I go online via a browser to read my email on that account.

I also tried setting up the sbcglobal.net email address via add account (other) using two sets of incoming / outgoing mail server setups I got (one from Apple; one from SBCGlobal support):
pop.att.yahoo.com (SBCglobal support)
pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com (Apple)

Had issues with both, either password related or duplicate emails were showing up (that could have been because I had two accounts set up going to the same mailbox).

I've worked with a Apple Product specialist and we can't get it working (I've even had to do a restore on the phone) via the email functionality on the phone (but I can access & send emails from my sbcglobal account when I open it in Safari on the phone with no problems.)

From what I can tell, several other SBCGLOBAL users are also hitting issues with their email accounts. Did you resolve them? If so, please let me know how so I can try to fix this on my end.

I just moved from Verizon to AT&T to get the IPHONE, I'd hate to have to move back 😟

HOW exactly is this such a great solution for you all? It's ALWAYS worked if you set up your sbcglobal account as pop3/smtp. Where it doesn't work is when you want to use the IMAP like features of Yahoo mail.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306074

The article above clearly says we should be able to hook up our sbcglobal accounts via yahoo and use the Push features. It worked for me until I applied the 1.0.1 update. And it's broken now. It frustrates me to no end to hear that the "solution" all of you have gotten from people on this forum as well as geniuses at the store is "set it up using pop/smtp, or switch to gmail"

FIX IT APPLE!

IT'S ALIVE!!!!

Today, I went over to the Stoneridge Mall Apple store over in Pleasanton for a couple of their free IPhone workshops. For the first one, there were just two of us and both of us were sbcglobal email users...the stars must have been lined up for that one. We both went through the steps of setting up our sbcglobal email accounts with our Mac instructor (Anny). She got hers up and running, no problems and went on her merry way. I of course kept seeing the same problems over and over again...multiple copies of emails (at the time I had 18 emails in the INBOX but the phone said I had over 100!), unable to send emails, password problems associated with both the incoming and outgoing mail servers and of course, my favorite problem, being unable to access my account online while it was set up on the iphone.

Anny kept at it and voila, after changing some settings on my sbcglobal account online regarding spam, finding the right combination of incoming & outgoing mail settings and a hard reset of the IPhone for good measure, all is working and right in the world now.

So, for the benefit of any sbcglobal users out there who may have IPhones and are having trouble, try this. It worked for me, it may work for you. I can send emails, I can receive emails via the mail feature on the IPhone (I can't see my folders from the account but I'd rather be able to send & receive emails than worry about seeing folders!!!)

1) On your sbcglobal account online via your desktop/laptop, from your mail page, click on "Options"
2) Then click on "POP Access and Forwarding"
3) On the next page, make sure that you check "Web and POP Access"
4) Then check "I don't want to receive any messages that SpamGuard thinks are spam"
5) On your IPhone, use the following settings:
Incoming Mail Server pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com (I was told by AT&T to use pop.att.yahoo.com)
Outgoing Mail Server pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com (again, I was told to use pop.att.yahoo.com)
Make sure you enter your username and password for both server settings, even though the outgoing one says "optional"
Once the account is verified, then go to ADVANCED and set Incoming SSL to "ON" and Outgoing SSL to "Off"

This, and I say this in the nicest possible way, lowly retail clerk was able to do for me what at least 10 Apple technicians couldn't (and probably about the same number of AT&T technicians). I made a point to track down Anny's manager and tell her that she had solved my problem.

Hello Bonnie,

I used those mail server settings yesterday but not sure if I had Mail SSL - ON.

I'll try that again today...

And since I can't edit my old post, here are the issues I had specifically with both email accounts I was able to address for my sbcglobal email:

For the username@sbcglobal.net@yahoo.com account....I could see all of my folders (just as if I was on a browser reading my email) but I couldn't send any mails (the iPhone made the sound as if the mail was sent but it never got to the other end).

For the username@sbcglobal.net account....I could no longer see any of my folders but my emails were duplicated (as I said this was probably because there were two accounts) but I was successfully able to send emails from the iPhone.

What I'm looking for help on is to be able to send emails from my sbcglobal.net account and also see all of my folders.

Thank for whatever help you can give me...

Regards,

Vicki AKA Miaocherie

Hello everyone,

I just worked with about my 8th Apple Technician and while it's not the perfect solution, we were able to come up with a temporary workaround (and this guy is off trying to figure out how to fix this issue completely). So for folks who may be having similar problems with not being able to set up an sbcglobal email account or not being able to send emails if you are successful, here you go:

While on the phone with yet another Apple Product Specialist, I signed up for a FREE YAHOO account and after several password attempts (make sure you use all lowercase letters, no numbers, no special characters...I know it isn't the securest way of creating a password but this hopefully is only temporary!), I finally got the IPhone to validate and recognize it. Then he helped me set up a POP mail account on my Mac Mailer for my sbcglobal.net. Then we created a rule in the Mac Mailer where mails sent to my sbcglobal account would be forwarded to my new free YAHOO account. When I sent a test email from my corporate email account to my sbcglobal account, while it wasn't exactly instantaneous, it did finally get to my Yahoo account and I was able to view it on the IPhone. The last test is sending emails from my YAHOO account. If that doesn't work, I guess I can go back to reading my sbcglobal emails via Safari on the phone until AT&T/SBCGlobal and Apple get their acts together enough to get this issue solved.

For anyone reading this and trying to figure it out, here's the deal.

I have a sbcglobal.net account. For me, and for many others, setting it up as an IMAP account (meaning that mail will theoretically push to the iPhone) works for receiving mail but not for sending. The custom sendmail settings which are in the knowledgebase article are useless because you can't access those settings on your phone.

Therefore, if you want to be able to send mail from a sbcglobal or pacbell account, I would not recommend setting up your account as a Yahoo! account on the phone - putting the address as NAME@sbcglobal.net@yahoo.com

INSTEAD, I would recommend that users use the POP function to set your account up as OTHER. Meaning you manually enter the settings as they are on your mac or pc for incoming and outgoing mail. No IMAP access and you need to either manually check for new mail or set the account to auto-check. But, it has reliably worked for me since Day 1 of the iPhone being out.

That's my two cents of advice. Until Apple allows users to customize the Yahoo! mail option to allow for different SMTP servers like its KB article says, I have a feeling that IMAP won't work for those of us who have non-Yahoo domains for our Yahoo mail.

Hope that makes sense.

Hi-

Any updates here? I've been going through the same nightmare with sbcglobal.
I'm currently set up with my sbcglobal email appended with the @yahoo.com (i.e., name@sbcglobal.net@yahoo.com). From other blogs, I've also entered in the Advanced settings, the IMAP prefix of imap.apple.yahoo.com.
I can send, but not receive, and I can ONLY see my Inbox folder.

Annoying...

Ok - Here's an update.

I followed all of the previous instructions above from [Vicki AKA Miaocherie], but it didn't work. I could receive, but not send.

This is what I did, which I can now send and receive from my sbcglobal.net account via my iPhone, but I still cannot see my personal folders, which would really be helpful since I definitely file things.

I did what [Vicki AKA Miaocherie] submitted, but altering step 5:

1) On your sbcglobal account online via your desktop/laptop, from your mail page, click on "Options"
2) Then click on "POP Access and Forwarding"
3) On the next page, make sure that you check "Web and POP Access"
4) Then check "I don't want to receive any messages that SpamGuard thinks are spam"

Changed step:
5) I deleted my sbcglobal account on my iPhone and re-set it up with these settings:
I added the account as POP.
I used my regular email address in the Address field (i.e., name@sbcglobal.net) and did not append '@yahoo.com' to it.

Incoming Host: pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com and entered my user name and password.

Outgoing Host: smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com and also entered my user name and password. (This differs from the previous instruction, which stated to use pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com for BOTH incoming and outgoing).

After submitting (and I must add that verification initially failed), I went to Advanced and turned SSL ON for Incoming, and OFF for Outgoing.

Then I powered off my iPhone and restarted.

I tested this back and forth several times with my work email, and I was sending and receiving OK from my sbcglobal.net account from my iPhone. I can only see Inbox and Sent folders, plus Draft if I cancel and save an email... This will work for the time being.

Now, if someone can post how to additionally see all of my personal folders, that would be a big help.

Thanks!
Scott

Bravo Cambie. I challenge all of you that have now been able to get your sbcglobal account to work via the Other setup option try it with the Y!Mail option. Then tell me if you can send mail. You should NOT have to enter in a pop or smtp server. In fact, you cannot add pop/smtp server names via the Y!Mail setup option. The problem you know have is that by setting your account up via the Other option you can't use IMAP and you can't use push email. Neither work via the Other option.

Amen. The question is does anyone have any idea whether folks at Apple are working on a fix?

I've already submitted feedback on the Apple KB article which is just flat-out inaccurate (and makes you wonder whether the authors actually have ever tried out their solution on a real iPhone) and maybe others should too. That article has been held out by some as the "answer" when in fact, it's just added to the problem. IMAP on non-Yahoo! but still-ATT domains only works for receiving, not for sending. End of story.

This was a WORKAROUND, not posted to challenge anyone or to be taken as rolling over and just accepting... I just wanted to get it working since I travel and cannot access any webmail programs from the PCs at the internet-restricted locations where i work (although I can via Safari on my iPhone, which is great). I totally agree that it needs to be fixed! Mine, too, was working until I received the patch.

I have spent way too many hours on this problem in the last two days. One specialist knew less than my cat but that's rare when talking with Apple. Today I spent two solid hours entering the sbc info over and over again. I had printed out the changes required by AT&T re: pop and smtp settings.
So far I have received messages I send myself or messages I forward from the desktop. What I don't get is any other email sent to the sbcglobal address.
I hate that I would have to go to the Internet, play around with that to access what for this amount of money for a phone should work.
Have you discovered anything else that works?
Oh, I had the bright idea to see what would happen if I also used the yahoo account that I only use as a holding bin, so to speak. Sure enough, mail sent to yahoo goes through just fine.
I tried AT&T online chat this afternoon and got absolutely nowhere. After 30 minutes they told me they were trained to deal with the issue and to call Apple. I'd already done that, of course... three times. If AT&T is the only provider, why can't they get this together.
Did you ever connect with a person who could help?
I got this page forwarded from the Apple specialist who spent two long hours patiently trying to help.
Thanks
Joanie
