rolodex effect

So I just started learning Motion yesterday, so stick with me.

I have created a background and I'm looking to have multiple 2D images rotate into view. I imagine it like a rolodex card -- moving from the bottom of the screen in a half circle and stopping right in the center. Like stepping on a rake, if you've had the misfortune.

First, I can't isolate the images from the background, in order to key frame.

Second, I need to replicate same movement multiple times.

I know this is 101 stuff, but...what can I say.

best,

Heya,

Just build it as you described it: a rolodex. You can array some images in a wheel pattern (you'll have to do a little math) and rotate the whole group past the camera. You can also use a Circle replicator on an image sequence to do the same. Here's a constantly rotating example, using a replicator: Rotate.

This has been great and I've got most of it, thank to all the help here. A few last tweeks, I know they are easy ones.

First, I have everything worked out fine, but when I turn the rolodex to camera the background moves with it. Is there a way to isolate the rolodex from the background in order for the rolodex to be repositioned against the background.

Second, how do I speed up the path?

Third, Now this is more intricate, but I want to put a different picture at each point? Is that a new post?

I appreciate it.

On the third point, using different images for each cell of the replicator... can this be done? If so, please please please share! I'm not sure I follow the "movie with a picture" idea unless you're saying "use a replicated drop zone." It'd be cool if you could then drop different media in each drop zone and it wouldn't replicate. I'll give it a shot and see what happens but I would be interested!

PS: The rolodex project is really neat. The lighting really adds a nice "apple" kind of look to it as well.

Heya,

If the source for a replicator is a movie or image sequence, the Replicator can use a frame for each cell. The "Signs" example I did, way above, uses that method. I just used a file-renaming app to take my collection of sign images and rename them "sign1.png, sign2.png" and so on. In Motion, I brought that in as an image sequence and used it as the replicator source.

For renaming files into a sequence, I recommend John Narun's File Sequencer. It's easy and free.
