Ipod Video (5th Gen) No Sound / Heavy Static - Read This! - Quick Fix Found

Hi There, first off I am one of the many upset people who finds their relatively new Ipod Video not playing audio any longer through either the headphone jack or the bottom dock connector. If this is you.. try this out:

** Pinch the bottom right corner of your Ipod and see if the audio comes back. **

I saw this tip on another forum and it worked like a charm. This obviously shows me this is a manufacturing defect and nothing else.

This problem can be described by the following:

1) Ipod 5th Generation, age of about 6-15 months.
2) Usually starts with heavy static in audio, increasing to nothing but static, fading into silence.
3) It's not the headphones, and it's not the bottom connector.
4) The 5 R's doesn't fix the problem.
5) Starts very suddenly.
6) Seems to be heat related as each morning after cooling off, the Ipod will play audio for about 5 minutes, then start the process all over.
7) Pinching the bottom right corner seems to temporarily fix the problem by fixing the broken solder/connection.

OK, my Ipod just left for server (another $30, thanks) and I have read others say that the service people claim nothing is wrong (usually because it takes 5 minutes or so for the problem to surface) and their Ipod is returned to them.

I just want Apple to be aware of this problem and offer to fix it, it's not fair to have a product break "under warranty" and still be faced with paying $30 (minimum) to fix it.

Please add to this if you have the same issue.

Well Apple, my Ipod has been worthless for over 2 months now. There's 10,000 plus hits on this stream and many other streams full of your customers who feel they have been ripped off. ALL HAVING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE.

If your not going to take responsibility for your defective product, why don't you just post on this forum and say so! This would save your jilted customers some valuable time.

Sincerely Disappointed, Jim Gioia

yepp once again. exact same problem for me. I've had it for about 2 years now and loved it up until a few days ago. it's just pathetic that they dont expect theses products to last more than a few years. if all of these are going bad they need to do something about it. this may be a lil off topic but all of the songs have been deleted off of my computer. is there any program i can use to take them off the ipod that will save them back to my hard drive?

5th generation iPod - black. Received for Christmas in 2006.

Add me to the list. I lost sound a few weeks back and decided to look into customer "support." I found this forum and all of the other unhappy customers.

I've treated this iPod like a baby for the 19 or so months that I've had it. The screens been protected and the iPod has been in an aluminum case since the day I took it out of the box.

I press on the right corner very hard and I get sound until I let off.

I am so disappointed in Apple right now... I can't call them at this time because I won't be friendly. Although it isn't the tech or the customer relations fault... they are representing the faulty company that obviously refuses to "support" its customers.

I'm another victim. My 80 GB iPod which I rarely use and is in pristine condition suddenly stopped making sound. Then I found this forum, pinched the right side and voila, sound again.... that is until I let go. The fridge trick worked too, but only for a half a song or so.

I too am very disappointed in Apple-- having spent thousands of dollars on Apple products over the past few years, I consider myself a "loyal" customer. So I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple store this evening and tried to be polite and firm. But "Jon the Genius" claimed to have never heard of this problem, and downplayed the magnitude of the issue by saying that the number of people experiencing this was miniscule compared to the number of products that Apple sells. He further declared that "a couple of people" on a discussion thread was not enough to convince Apple that there was a problem.

So I urge anyone who has this problem to speak up: post a short message on this thread, and call/visit Apple regularly to remind them of this issue. There is clearly a common defect -- perhaps a defective lot off the production line -- and Apple needs to own up to it and make us all square. I bought mine in December 2006, which appears to be consistent with many other victims on this board. My guess is that all the iPods having this issue were manufactured around the same time.

I will not buy another Apple product until this is resolved successfully, because it is flat-out wrong for Apple to force consumers to pay for their mistake. If the number of victims is relatively small as "Jon the Genius" claimed, then the cost to fix it is also small. So fix it!!

I am also experiencing the exact same problem described by so many others in this forum.

I also received my 5th Gen. 30gb Video Ipod for Christmas in 2006 and it worked well until about a month ago. I defiantly did not do anything to harm the Ipod as there is not a single scratch on it. Hopefully Apple will recall these clearly defective Ipods.

I'm amazed to see the volume of complaint when thinking my issue was an isolated one according to Apple. This conglomerate enterprise is happy to let its loyal customers post complaint after complaint on this message board without recognising the manufacturing defect the 80g 5th gen Ipod has.

I agree we need to continue to go into the stores and make the correct noises for Apple to sit up and take note of this problem. We live in a throw away society but im not going folk out £180 every 18 mths or underpin the sales of a brand by purchasing another possible faulty unit.

Until Apple recognise that there is a defective product in circulation and offer to fix the problem I will be boycott any future purchase of Apple product.

I've had the exact same problem as everyone else in this thread. My Ipod was purchased the summer of 06 and was in outstanding condition but more than a year out of warranty. I called customer service to see what if anything they could do. The first rep I spoke with was rude and told me to "go buy another Ipod" so I called back. The second rep pretty much told me the same thing, so I asked that he give my case special consideration since it seemed to be a manufacturing defect and referred him to this thread. I asked that he escalate the case to his supervisor. After putting me on hold, he came back and told me his supervisor told him there was nothing they could do. I then asked to speak to his supervisor and he stated I'd be told the same thing. Eventually he transferred me to the customer relations dept (or something like that). This is when things started to change. The rep I got was outstanding. She called her engineering department and when she came back on the line she told me it seemed to be a newly developing issue and that they would either repair or place it as long as they diagnosed it having this specific problem. They sent a box fedex overnight, I shipped it in, a week later I have a replacement on the way - at no cost. There is hope - be friendly but persistant! Good luck!

Same problem. Christmas to early summer (i dont quite remember...) i got my new ipod, a 30g black video. treated me pretty well over the years. it has a few scratches, but i really assumed it would work for at least another year or two before i got a new one or it broke... anyways, about a week ago, i wake up not to my beautiful music playing over my portable speakers, but a load of static. as with everyone else, the music sometimes doesnt even play at all.

the problem is, i dont have a warentee or anything. is there hope if i send my ipod in, or must i invest another 200 dollars in a new ipod

I found this thread when it only had five or so responses - looks like based on the 10,000+ views there are quite a few more of us lurking out there with this same problem. I encourage YOU to take a moment and post your experience on here.

Mine is rather unique ( :-D )

Black 80GB Ipod Video purchased December 2006, failed July 2008. Squeezing brought sound back temporarily.

I've pulled the ipod apart, checked out the circuit board, and unfortunately for those of us with electronic expertise - this is not something that can be heated up and re-soldered easily like some consumer electronics products out there. Since this board is double sided and has chips on both sides with the connection to the audio chip inaccessible, board replacement is the only option I can see. Maybe, after all 10,000+ of us that looked at this thread post in here, Apple will be moved to do something about it!

This may not be relevant to most - so apologies in advance!

Anyone who has opened their ipod in search of a resolution of this issue - Could you let us know what the part number is of your board compared to the model - I.E. - I am thinking that the 30GB has the 820-1763-A board with a 2005 date, and the 60 and 80GB have the 820-1945-A, dated 2006.

I would be curious to see if more of one part number has the problem or not.

Also - when attempting to purchase a replacement board from an Ipod parts site on the web, I was sent an 820-1763-A which, while almost identical to the newer 820-1945-A board that I removed, produces an older style monochrome display, and is incompatible with the hard drive in my ipod. The site's owners, in the spirit of Apple themselves, are uncooperative and insist that the boards are universal.

30GB Ipods have 32MB of SDram, while the 80GB has 64MB of SDram. Not universal.

So I am curious - Does anyone with a 30GB Ipod have the 820-1945A board?, Does anyone with a 60 or 80GB have the 820-1763? And if so, are any of the 820-1763's malfunctioning.
