External monitor won't show 23.98 fps source

I am using FCP 5.1.4 and have notice that my NTSC external monitor does not playback 23.98 source files from the Viewer or the timeline/Canvas window. Other Projects which have the Vid Rate in the Timeline Item Properties set to 29.97 playback fine.

Video Playback is set to Apple FireWire NTSC (720x480) through a DSR-40.

Is this fixed in FCP 6? Is there a work around or something I am missing that will allow me to view a sequence with a Vid Rate setting of 23.98? I am assuming this is the problem because this is the only difference between the settings of the two Projects.

MacPro 3.0 GHz, 4GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I'd try resetting the PMU or Power Management Unit. Don't know where yours is as you didn't mention the computer... google it and see. Sometimes it's on the motherboard. This tends to fix FW glitches here and there.

You have not said if this has ever worked.

Two or three possible issues. Your NTSC monitor is 30fps, that's all it knows unless it's a special monitor, information you have not provided. I'm not sure how it will interpret 24fps unless the 24 is baked into a 30fps video standard.

Does the 40 accept 24fps video?

You might try dropping your 23.98 sequence into a 29.97fps timeline at add pulldown for screening.

I always monitor 23.98 thru my DSR-11 to my NTSC toshiba tv... just a normal TV. Plays fine.

Not sure why his would be different. Maybe somewhere I have a setting that forces pulldown onto FW pushed video. Might be in my RT settings.

that's because fcp adds pulldown to the sequence to facilitate external viewing of a 23.98 fps sequence. pulldown options are in the rt settings of a 23.98 fps sequence.

judging from the op's post, perhaps something like a preference dump or permissions repair may help....

or not.

System Settings>Playback Control

What is your Pulldown Pattern set to? Make sure it's not set to a 25 option.

... just another thing to check that your material is 23.98fps and not 24fps. unlike some editors, FCP will not display 24fps in NTSC.

David - I have not tried this before, so I cannot say it has worked before. And regarding the playback of the monitor, the two I have tried are a PVM-9040 and a PVM-20M4J neither seems to work. Should frame rate be an issue on monitor playback?

Michael - I did drop the 23.98 sequence into a 29.97fps timeline and it played back, although the resolution and aspect ratio are different.

I suspect the issue is the Apple FireWire (720x480) setting. If I change the Sequence Setting from 480x360 custom (4:3) (original setting) to 720x480 NTSC DV (3:2) and change the QuickTime Video settings from Photo JPEG (original settings) to DV/DVCPRO - NTSC; I can get the original sequence to play at 23.98fps.

Now the question is how does one playback non-standard/non-full screen resolutions on an external monitor?

Well, thanks for including all that non-standard info after we've beat our heads against a wll. That needed to be included in your first post.

for non standard video, you need a severely expensive multi-format monitor and video capture card to playout. Firewire is a very limited pipeline in what it'll play out.
