Typing on the iPhone

I'm just curious as to what a lot of iPhone users think about the virtual keyboard. Even before the phone was released, that was one of the biggest criticisms from the media, and many people I know. Personally, I love the keyboard, and didn't find it difficult to use (even the first time I used the phone). My boyfriend on the other hand, is fascinated by my phone and always wants to play with it, but always complains about the keyboard.

I'm curious, do you think apple made a smart move by getting rid of a traditional keyboard?

I also concur that they made a good decision. And just as stated in the demonstration video, if you trust the intelligence of the keyboard, your speed increases drastically. I think it's Fascinating how the software is intelligent enough to expand the target area of the key it anticipates you are going to hit for a given word and also, I love how the keyboard changes based on the application you are in. You can't get that on a fixed traditional keyboard. That's for sure.

I think the screen is great. I'm coming from a Razr and it would take me forever to type on that. For me two thumbs work best when in landscape on the web. It would be cool to have notes, email and SMS go in to landscape mode.

I think if a person is not open to change they may have a hard time with it. It just takes a little practice.

sorry I dont find the keyboard easy to use at all. Larger hands and Im making mistakes even after two weeks use. Yes the autocorrect works great so thanks to Apple for including it.

- However, I really miss the stylus (from my Trea 650), never had a problem with losing it. Fingers just cant offer the precision that a stylus does. With the coming of cut and paste, I dread having to touch my iPhone screen that much. Plus it makes a mess of the screen itself, putting smears and oils on the display. Fingers look clumsy and awkward, not a graceful experience, but if its got to be this way, at least offer a Plan B for those who still wish to use a stylus.

One size doesnt fit all.....

The keyboard is ok. It is not as good as my physical keyboard on my old Treo 650 Smartphone. But the Apple virtual keyboard is good enough.

I don't agree that the smart features on the virtual keyboard speed things up. Most likely I will hear that I am just a dolt and don't know how to use it, but the auto correct feature continually makes things a lot slower. It always wants to change what I am trying to enter into some other word. You really have to watch this carefully or your entries just get scrambled like the morning's eggs. This is especially true if you try to type with two thumbs. I have found that using one finger and the edge of that finger yields the best results.Your mileage may vary.

But overall the Iphone is great and the keyboard is not such a big hassle that I think there is a better smart phone out there.

Me = big fingers = really really hard time using the keyboard

But I also find that I don't use it as much to type things as I did on older smartphones, so it doesn't matter that much. I have had the iPhone since day 1 and no amount of practice and training have in any way improved my typing speed on the iPhone...with the Blackjack, I was getting about 45 wpm. On the iPhone, the best I can get is about 20 wpm WITH many mistakes...

If I hunt and peck and go slowly, I get good accuracy of course - but it also takes 8 times as long to type something in than on past phones.

Still, I don't find the typing issue to be that big -- slows me down, yes, inaccurate, yes, but usable, yes. Just don't look to the iPHone as a blackberry or blackjack replacement for those who need to text all day long.

I think the virtual keyboard(s) is great! I type with two thumbs, looking only at the keys I'm aiming for -- never at the pop-up letters, the predicted words or what I've actually typed. I just "type" as fast as I can and then do a quick proofread to fix any errors (which usually happen if I miss the first letter of a word). I know I hit LOTS of wrong letters using fat thumbs but most of them are corrected before I proofread.

Keyboards are a big thing with me. When buying a computer I spend a lot of time playing with keyboards to make sure I like the feel and spacing. That's why I've been such a Palm die-hard...no keyboard! So I was understandably very doubtful about the virtual keyboard on the iPhone.

I love it! I can type pretty quickly and now have the confidence to just keep motoring despite errors knowing that when I review the message, it will mostly have been corrected by the software. Even huge time lags don't faze me anymore. I just keep typing away!

I'm hoping the next Palm product adopts this somehow...
