installed tiger and monitor frozen with apple symbol in a circular slash

i upgraded from 10.3.9 to tiger 10.4. when the computer went through the restart, the apple logo came up and then a "circcle with a slash" weent around the logo (like a non-smoking symbol).

i have no idea what happened. any thoughts?

powermac g4, Mac OS X (10.3.9)

More than likely Tiger doesn't like the hardware, usually bad or nonstandard RAM. Boot the machine with the Apple Hardware Test disk and run the extended tests. If it passes everything, then run it again. Finally, download (if you an get the machine working) Rember and run its extensive tests. I take it you don't have a bootable backup of your previous Panther installation. That's bad juju.

After you sort out the problems, get a bootable, external FireWire HD, and make a bootable backup/clone before updating. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall everything. Then, peruse these
