Can I use minidv tapes recorded in HD on my non-hd minidv camcorder?

If I was to obtain tapes recorded on DVCAM or HD or HDV and play them using my regular miniDV camcorder, will that work?

To capture them to my hard drive, will I need the actual camera they were recorded on?

gogiangigo was right ... I haven't seen a more poorly structured question in a long, long time.

But seeing how you failed to mention the particular model of "my regular miniDV camcorder" it would be impossible for any one to say just what it will play. But here are the basics:

• Consumer MiniDV camcorders will normally only record and play DV.

• In addition to DV, some professional and a few prosumer DV camcorders will play DVCam.

• DVCam camcorders will record in DVCam, and some will record in DV. Most will play back both, but not all will accept the Mini tape cassettes.

• HDV must be played back in an HDV device. And some HDV tapes will not playback properly unless played in an HDV device that matches their flavor of HDV. Most HDV camcorders will also record and play in DV mode.

As for your inclusion of "HD" ... no MiniDV camcorder that I'm aware of will playback any flavor of HD.

Ouch. Is this a discussion forum or a Final [cut] Term paper? Shame on my pals for going outta their way to make a poster's question sound dumb.

Actually, I totally understood the question - maybe it wasn't such a bad question after all.

Sorry, guy, you can't use your inexpensive minidv camera as a way to capture your expensive HD film work into your computer. It won't recognize the signal.

That wasn't so hard, was it, gentlemen?

Bighulawood,
you are missing the point, it is important to stress that the more info we are given the more we can help. Mentioning one specific information can lead to a solution! You want an example?

Your answer is not quite accurate:

1)You failed to answer about DVCAM tapes playback and capture

2)Regular (and really popular) cameras like SONY PC100 can play DVCAM

What tells you that the poster does not have a similar camera?

And there are several small HDV cameras which I would consider "regular cameras" to take with me on holiday!

We are not trying to offend people here and we truly welcome JRALD but at the same time we must improve comunication as this Forum will work better and faster if we do.

You're right, G, I "assumed" (that's bad and I apologize). I just read the original poster's note and recalled the first time I put my HDV recorded minidv into a sd-only camera thinking it would still play/capture to the computer for me. Trial and error.

Still, I felt your response (What! What! What!) had a slightly "chilling effect." As I, too, am a newbie I hope you experts wont make me feel stupid for asking questions.

Thank you for your guidance. I know your help has made a world of difference for me in the past.
