Disk Drive not working

I have an old G4, which although is not my main computer, I still use. The issue is the disk drive doesnt work. I can insert a disk fine, but it never makes the whirring sound of a disk being loaded and no disk ever pops up on the screen. I am hoping to find a way to fix this that does not involve a professional repair, as they are expensive and this computer is 4 years outside of the warranty. Is there a utility that will diagnose the problem? Any other suggestions?

Intel G5, iMac G4, Mac OS X (10.4.10), Also have 10.3.9 on iMac G4

Hello! Open the system profiler in apps>utilities>system profiler and see if it shows your cd/dvd drive. That's a first start. There may be some options for replacement but you should check the system profiler first to see if it's seeing it at all. Tom

Try going to  menu > About this Mac > More Info... > Hardware > ATA you should then see details of your Optical Drive. E.g:> System Profiler wrote:

Well that's a start at least the iMac knows it has a drive.

Do the same symptoms appear for music CDs, DVD-ROMs, DVD Videos etc etc.

Have you checked that in  menu > System Preferences... > CDs & DVDs > that you aren't set to "ignore" CDs and DVDs.

In the Finder Finder menu > Preferences > General do you have CDs and DVDs set to appear on the desktop?

My computer won't recognize DVDs anymore either (although the System Profiler acknowledges that the drive is there.) This of course precludes starting up with a DVD, too, so diagnostics and re-installation become tricky as well. Curiously, CDs still appear on the desktop the same as before, so I've been busy backing up the data that wasn't included in my latest DVD back-up on 650 MB CDs.

I've never cleaned the drive before. Any recommendations as to a product or type of product?

I'm awaiting a resolution to this issue along with everybody else.

A drive cleaner that's helped me in the past is a disk with little brushes on it, made by Allsop. However, it's not helping me now.

The problem I have may be different from what's been discussed so far. My drive makes a bit of a buzzing sound, as if the plastic gears are out of alignment. At first it did this a lot, with the drive opening and closing on its own in response to the problem. Now that I've repaired permissions, it only does the buzzing when a disk is inserted. No disks are recognized, and I don't hear the sound of the disk spinning at high speed. Sometimes the disk is spit back out, and sometimes it just sits there, unrecognized.
