All of a sudden, keeps reverting back to Edge from my Wifi connection

My iphone connected to my home's wifi router no problem until yesterday. Now, I will manually have to select 'linksys' in the Wifi settings. It will work as long as I use it, but if I leave the phone dormant for a few minutes it reverts back to Edge.

Yesterday, I was driving along a road and it asked me to join a linksys network I was passing. I told it not to. Does it have that network confused with mine? If so, what can I do to reset it and make sure it automatically joins mine from now on?

It shouldn't be required to manually select a wireless network that you were successfully connected to previously unless something has changed with that wireless network.

Try a general iPhone reset first - press and hold the Home key and Sleep/Wake or On/Off key simultaneously until you see the white Apple logo and then release. This can take up to 10 seconds so ignore the slide to turn off prompt during this time.

If no change and there are no problems with your router - I would try resetting the router and modem to confirm.

Shut down/turn off all computers and devices connected to your wireless network including the iPhone. Turn off or unplug your router and then turn off or unplug the modem. Wait a few minutes and then reverse the process. Turn on the modem and wait until the modem is completely reset. Turn on the router and wait until the router is completely reset with the modem and then turn on your iPhone and computer or computers connected to this network.

No change after doing so, you can try forgetting the network settings on the iPhone.

Settings > WiFi. Select your wireless network - blue button with right facing > and select Forget this Network.

Then connect again entering your wireless network password.

FYI - it is a good idea and recommended by security experts to change the default name of the wireless network from "linksys" to the name of choice.

I have the same problem as of about 7-10 days ago. This happens with all networks now; as soon as the iPhone screen goes dark, it automatically drops its WiFi connection and I have to manually go into settings>wifi>select network.

I have done a soft reset and it didn't have any effect on this problem.

It seems this happens only with networks it 'knows', that is netwoks that are friendly and frequently used. It will still notify me of 'novel' networks, but never the 'known' networks, forcing me to maually select it again.

xrad2,

When you mention soft reset, I am assuming you held down the top and menu buttons until the iPhone restarted, is that correct?

Try toggling Airplane mode on for about 30 seconds, and then back off. If that doesn't work reset all network settings. In Settings, go to General, and choose "Reset Network Settings", and see if that addresses your issue.

If not, the next step to try is restoring your iPhone via iTunes.

Hope this helps,

ml12,

Calendars are backed up when they sync. If you aren't syncing them with anything they may not be backed up.

Notes should be backed up after a successful sync of addresses and or calendars. However, to be safe you may want to email them to yourself so you have the information from them.

Photos are not synced or backed up, if you haven't downloaded them, they will be lost.

Hope this helps,

Nathan C.

Yes if the E or EDGE is there than the edge network is available, one thing that I found out myself last night was that the Edge network being there does NOT mean your getting the full signal strength, I tried to get to the YOUTUBE, and for the life of me couldnt, come to work and I am still on the EDGE network and it works fine. I got this to work at home on my WIFI and the speed was awesome, NO problems. Try resetting your hardware, ie. cable modem, router and go through those steps first. I have the Apple wifi Not the extreme, and it's awesome, love that thing

First thing to do is turn off the ask to join networks setting. It will save you tons of battery life by not using it.
second, by telling it don't join when you were driving it then remembered to not ever join linksys.
Since that ssid is the same as yours at home it is causing problems.
In General settings choose reset and choose reset network settings. then go back and make sure to turn off the ask to join again since it will have been turned back on by default.
now manually connect to your linksys. and it should remember it. even though the ask to join is off when you come home it will automatically connect to your network.

FYI...I had issues with my iPhone not recognizing or automatically connecting to the wireless network at a friends house (which I had previously joined several times). iPhone prompted me for a network password each time I entered their wireless network. I found that it was because my home wireless network had the same network name (SSID) as my friends wireless network (which I had set up for them). I changed my wireless network SSID to be unique, then had iPhone "forget" both networks, then re-joined both wireless networks...and I haven't dropped a connection since. It seams that iPhone cannot recognize multiple wireless connections that have the same network name. Hope this helps.

I know this is off the subject a little bit, but,

I am from a middle school in Wisconsin and I have problems with my computer.

My Middle School has a 1-1 Laptop Program just started 1 year ago.

My computer wasn't a Macbook, but an iBook G4.
This computer, when it is out of the major network of ours, is almost helpless.
but, if I open a word file and click save, wait 15 minutes while a loading curser is showing, it will work like a charm. But, when I go home and log on to my own network, it will log on to a neighboring network. what can I do to stop it from doing this?

Note: Running old Mac OS X Tiger.
