Connecting i-pod to TV

I've been trying to do this, through my I-pod dock, without success. I have put the red and white cable into the AV slot at the back of the TV, a new Humax flat-screen. No sound -- the screen simply says no signal. Do I need an S-video-cable before it works at all?

The audio signal "commes" tru the white andred plug.
The video signal you have 2 options,
yellow plug on the AV-cable, or high quality on the S-video connection

Audio: check with earphone to see if IPOD gives audio, if Y
check if you selected richt AV input on the TV. On a new TV there must be several and maybe have another name for the "tulip" connectors, like FRONT or SIDE(depending on brand TV)
To check the input (volume TV not to high) tap point of 3.5mm jack with finger, you should hear "buzzing/humming" noise on one channel.
Hopefully it helps, or if somone has better ideas to get you going

If you have a cable +designed for use with the Apple iPod,+ then all you need do is match up the colors, red to red, white to white and yellow to yellow. If you're curious...
Red is right side audio
White is left side audio
Yellow is Video

If you have a cable +designed for use with something other than the Apple iPod,+ the following may be your situation:
White is Right Audio and should connect to the TV's Red jack
Yellow is Left Audio and should connect to the TV's White jack
Red is Video and should connect to the TV's video jack

I have the same issue with my fifth generation iPod and a Smasung LN-R238W TV. The TV is not connected to anything (other than the power cable) at the moment and we are not planning on having it connected up to the cable TV, only to a DVD player in due course. When I connect the iPod to the AV1 inputs with the red, yellow and white cables properly connected (they came in the accessory box that had my dock and remote control in it) the TV ominously says "No Audio Signal". Do I need to have something else plugged in for it to work or do I have to change settings on my iPod before connecting it up? (Sadly left my iPod at a friend's house last weekend so have to wait until next weekend to get it back and try anything).
