Windows Vista wont install Ipod drivers

OK I NEED HELP....
I have Windows Vista and I am trying to install my iPod Nano, but everytime I plug my iPod in it ask me to insert the CD that came with it. As I don't have a CD I just click to install drivers automatically. Than it gives me an error saying 'unable to install drivers'. The divers do show up in the device manger under- other devices but there is a little warning sign next to it. So I right click on it and update driver, which it then tells me that it can't update driver. I have the latest version on iTunes and Quicktime, and I have also done a restore on my pc. Spoken to Apple 4 times!!! got no where with them. My iPod works fine on Windows XP machine, but not my Windows Vista. Has anyone else had any troubles with Vista??

I'm having an identical problem with Ipod Nano & Windows Vista. In Windows "Explorer" I can see the Ipod Nano as F:, along with the songs listed as files. However, they are not showing up on the Ipod in the listings anywhere. Help, I'm trying to work this out for my teenager, plus using dial-up. I downloaded the newest I-tune file this morning, but it then said it wasn't a valid Windows 32 application.

Thanks

I'm also having a similar problem with itunes and my ipod. I was using Windows XP before and everything worked fine. I got a new lab top with Windows Vista and transfered everything and it worked perfectly for the first month. Then all of a sudden itunes no longer reads my ipod, the option to click on the ipod on the left no longer appears. So I updated my version of itunes and nothing happened, still doesn't read it.

Has anyone been able to come up with a solution?

i also have the same exact problem and i was told by some apple person to take the ipod back to where i bought it and have them fix it which i'll be doin this week but other than that i think that apple needs to make a version of itunes compativle for vista

Actually they do. The latest version of iTunes is Vista compatible.

A lot of people have had problems with the iPod Shuffle and Vista. It is not an iPod problem, but rather a problem with Vista recognizing some flash based drives (of which the Nano and Shuffle are examples).

A couple of solutions to the Vista problem I have seen are as follows:

1) The first solution is that Vista sometimes does not look for drivers in the correct place. When the wizard asks you to provide a location for the drivers type in C:\WINDOWS\System32 and see if it properly locates and detects the iPod and loads the drivers.

2) Have a look in the hardware device list inside Control Pane. You may see you iPod listed (it should appear under the other devices heading) with a yellow triangle next to it. If it appears here then right click it select properties. Next click update device driver. Do not do the automatic find, rather click "I will choose the device from a list." Click on "storage device." With any luck VISTA now finds a USB mass storage device and install it properly.

A friend has the exact same thing happen so he UNinstalled Vista and went back to Windows XP. Now neither his computer nor his laptop will recognize his iPod classic. He tried using a different cable, nothing. Any suggestions?

I am not sure, but the procedures I mentioned about Vista may also work here for XP. Most likely step 1 with any luck. The computer may just be confused about the proper location of the USB Mass Storage Driver.

no it doent work.

#1) when I did number 1 it said it found the software and installed it. But I get the yellow triangle in device manager and the found new hardware box pops up when I plug it in. windows wants the software again.

#2 you say to Click on "storage device." there is nothing called storage deive so I clicked on every thing with storage in the name.. nothing. I tryed usb controler.

It found Apple ipod usb driver
apple moble device usb dirver
apple recovery dfu usb driver
apple recovery iboot usb driver.

nothing worked

as i posted in another forum:

"after much searching i found the answer on another forum:

I found these steps here: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1286482&SiteID=1&pageid=4

Scroll down to the quote from WickedMX.

Basically, C:\Windows\System32\Driverstore\Repository and look for a folder that starts with usbstor. You will probably have two different versions. Open the folder that is the newest version and then copy the files usbstor.inf and usbstor.PNF. Copy them to the C:\Windows\INF folder. Try installing your device(s) again and it should work like a charm!
