Margins set for US Letter in Page Setup

I have just updated to OS 10.4.10 and have noticed that when I go to Page Setup in any application that the bottom margin for US letter is set for 0.56" instead of 0.25". This creates a problems with printing page numbers and footers. Never noticed this until upgrading. Does anyone have any ideas, is this a glitch that needs to be fixed by Apple? Currently, I am using a workaround where I just create a new page size give it a the parameters of US LETTER and fixing the bottom margin to my needs. Any insite on this would be appreciated.

Where do you see margins an any Page Setup dialog? I don't see any margins associated with a paper size in the Page Setup dialog. I can make my own if I Manage Custom paper sizes, but there is nothing associated with US Letter (or any other size).

Margin settings are usually printer specific, i.e. the printer knows it cannot print below .56" of the bottom of the page because it is using that bit of paper to hold onto the paper. Many programs will set the margins to what the printer driver reports, but still let you print as close to the edge as you want, with a sufficient warning.

If I go to Page Set, did this in Acrobat, and place the cursor arrow over US Letter I will get a balloon message giving me the page size and margin setting. This is where I found it. I guess the thing that has us scratching our heads is the fact that before upgrading to 10.4.10 we were able to open Acrobat, go to Page Set up, have the Format for on "Any Printer", have the page size set for "US Letter" and it would not cut off our type a the bottom of the page. This is usually a Footer or Folio Number.

I am using the Custom paper size to manage the margin for now. It was just odd that I have not hit this problem before upgrading.

I don't have Acrobat and it didn't work as you described in Reader (or any other app I tried) so I sounds like it is an Acrobat modification to the page setup dialog.

I don't see anything in the release notes for .9 or .10 that affect printing in that way.

However, they may have redefined the standard margins for "Any Printer" to .56 footer as that sounds pretty familiar for most Ink Jets I've owned.
Your custom paper size is the only workaround I can suggest.

In any application that supports printing, like your browser, choose Page Setup. Then where it says Format For: Any Printer, choose the printer that you are using, instead. US Letter will have the margins for your printer, rather than fitting whatever printer happens to be on the market, which is what Any Printer chooses.

Then if you want this to be the default, go up to Settings: Page Attributes and choose Save As Default.
