Ethernet network unable to connect to other computer and internet at the sa

My new MacPro works fine but I cannot find a way to configure the ethernet to mount my G4 drives onto my MAcPro while connected to the internet,
My DSL modem is connected to a 10/100 Asante FriendlyNet hub
Both computers are connected to the same hub.
I connected both built-in ethernet outlets onthe MacPro to the hub as an attempt to solve the problem, to no avail.
If I disable PPPoE on either the ethernet connections, I lose the intenet connection; but I can then connect my two computers.
File sharing in ON on both computers.
Connecting the two computers directly with an ethernetr cable does not work either.

I phoned AppleCAre, and the technician was pleasnt and tried to help but had no answers since the network obviously can connect to the net.

I would appreciate any help with this problem.

Thank you.

So is your Asante hub, a hub or a router ?

You need a router, to act as a firewall, NAT, and to serve up IP addresses to both computers.

If you just have a hub, the Mac Pro gets the IP address assigned by the ISP. So does the PMG4 (the same IP address). And there is your problem.

Your only other option with a hub, is to connect the DSL modem to the Mac Pro, and then connect the PMG4 to the Mac Pro. And then share your internet connection from the DSL modem over the other Ethernet port to be PMG4. You'll also have to configure the Ethernet port connected to the PMG4 to a LAN IP address, and do the same on the PMG4.

So much easier if you trash the hub and buy a router. You could even buy one with built-in DSL modem and trash the modem you currently have too.

Thank you very much for the advice.
The Asante is a Ethernet hub. I will likely get a router as a frequent visitor wishes to occasionally connect to the internet wirelessly; hopefully that will also help the network operate correctly.
However, and I do not know why exactly, but I can now connect my G4 and MacPro and share the intenet connection between the two. All I did was try to print to my Epson 2400, oops, need a new driver, got that. Then reset the printers (Printer Setup). Lost my HP Laserjet 6MP( Apple Talk). Found it and turned on AppleTalk on one of the two built-in ethernets. And now all is working fine! All I can think is that somehow "things" got messed up when I did the data transfer when I originally started the new MacPro.
Thanks again for taking the time to look at my problem and giving me advice.
