Viewing Audio Meter while Inputing Video

I was just wondering if it is possible to view the real time audio VU meter while capturing video. Currently the second that I start capturing footage the meter in the background freezes and the capture pane is all that is active. Maybe it's not possible, just thought I would ask.

Also I was looking at getting a control surface for the audio. Can anyone tell me if I can keyframe the audio live in FCP, currently I do this manually but it would really make the process faster if I could use the slider and treat it like a mixer. Maybe this is a newbie question. Any thoughts, advice for working with audio in FCP. I have been looking at the alpha track control surface, anyone have experience with this device or have suggestions for an affordable control surface for my FCP system?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks

No, there's not a way to view the meter while capturing.

For a control surface, I highly recommend the Tascam FW-1082, or the FW-1884, if you want to spend a little bit extra.

It's a great mixer. Not only a control surface, but also an analog mixer, plus it adds a couple of mic preamps to your system, as well.

It, as do pretty much most control surfaces, allows you to record keyframes live while playing the timeline in FCP.

I might be my imagination - and I dont have FCP on the system I'm posting on so I cant check.
BUT I could've sworn that as soon as you start capturing, FCP switches the audio monitoring from the capture window into the timline audio monitors?
So aslong as your capture window isn't blocking the timeline audio monitors you can monitor using those. If I'm talking rubbish excuse me.
