Copying iTunes from Laptop Harddrive to External Drive?

Hiya!
I have a video ipod 80Gb and itunes on my laptop. I bought a 320Gb external hard drive a few months ago as my laptop's harddrive was starting to get full. However, i've noticed that again my laptop's harddrive is slowly being eaten up.
I was thinking to transfer itunes the programme and music files to the external harddrive to help in this issue. I have loads of films and music on there now. Everytime you copy music or download it makes a smaller copy for itunes.

So question:
*Can you move itunes and all its related files and folders to an external harddrive and still use it effectively? If so... HOW?*

Thanks
Jess

Don't try and move the iTunes program.

Assuming you have your files in the default arragement:
..My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music

You just copy the iTunes folder from My Music to the external drive.
Then start iTunes with the shift key held down and when asked to choose a library, navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive and choose iTunes Library.itl

If you don't have a standard setup then adjustemnts must be made to the method.

Always have your external HD available when you start iTunes or it will default back to the internal drive.
