Freezing iMacs

I was thinking of buying a new iMac in October when they have Leopard out, but I'm reading a lot of posts where some of the iMacs are freezing up, and the only way to "unfreeze" them is to use the power button and turn it off. I was just wondering if there are a lot of iMacs users that are still experiencing this, or has this been resolved?

Yeah, that does have to be frustrating, though. I was going to try to go by an Apple Store today, but I never could find it, so I'll probably have to do it when I get off of vacation. I'm wanting to see the screens to see the "washed out" look that I've heard a lot of people talking about. I just want to toy around with it just to see what it's like.

Has there been any solution to this? I've had my iMac now for 4 days and it's frozen probably about 5 or 6 times. All I can do is move the cursor around. No Alt-Cmd-Esc or anything. I can connect to it from another computer. I have a 24" core 2 duo extreme with 1gb of ram. I think I am going to call Apple tomorrow.

Alright I'll have to try that. I just found a site that discussed the same problem I'm having.

I looked in my error logs and it had the same ** ASIC Hang Log Start ** entry in it. Also, one of the comments has the steps to recreate this problem and every time I am able to freeze my iMac like clockwork. The steps are basically this:

1. Go into iTunes. Go the iTunes store.
2. Click on the TV Shows or Movies tab in the New Releases section (top middle section of the page). You should see a cover flow layout there.
3. Scroll up and down the page really fast. Works best if you grab the scroll bar with your mouse.

That'll usually freeze my computer in 5-10 seconds. I am guessing it's the drivers for the video card since scrolling up and down really fast would be graphically intensive.

I hate that the update didn't fix your problem. I don't currently have an iMac, but was thinking about getting one, but with all of the problems I'm seeing, I think I may just hold off a little while. I currently have an eMachine that I may try Ubuntu Christian Edition on. I can boot my computer from the CD, which I know will be a little slower, but will allow me a chance to "toy" around with it. If I really like it, I may just install it and use it until Apple gets all of the "iMac bugs" worked out. I definitely would not want to spend over $2,000 for a computer that would freeze up all the time. I hope you all get some resolution to your problems, and quick.

The likely culprit is the iMac Software Update 1.1
Re-install OSX and use iMac Software Updtae 1.0 instead.

Definitely not, the problems appear with 1.0 since the arrival of the new iMacs...

Sorry to hear that....for me it most definately was the 1.1 update, since going back to 1.0 my iMacs been up for 4 days....with regular 'sleeps'....hasn't crashed once.

I don't know how apple managed to release such buggy systems. Both my parents and aunt and uncle have gotten the 24" iMacs in the last 2 weeks. Both are switchers and both are unhappy.

Shame on you apple. I'm a die hard user of your products, and i get people to switch after 10-15 years of PC use because of my great experiences and this is what happens to them. You need to refocus your efforts on making a quality product, not something shiny and sparkly that makes people go ohhh ahhh...

The MDD 1.25ghz single core w/1.5gb of ram that I work on at work doing design is more stable and far more reliable than my parents/aunt's uncle's brand new 24" iMacs.

My iMac froze when trying to go into/out of sleep mode too...

I tried resetting the SMC, by shutting down, and pulling all power for about 1 minute. After that, I have been successful at having the display go in/out of sleep many times with no freeze (about a week now).

Hope that helps, while we wait for the iMac 1.2 update/drivers...

Best,

Doug
