Unsucessful to import from Panasonic VDR-D310

I just got my new VDR-D310, it listed in the support as compatible with iMovie '08, however when i plug in the usb cable couple of scenario come out. I'm using DVD-RW instead of DVD-RAM

1. Set as VR DVD - it will launch finder (however this is no go with the VR format)
2. Set as Video DVD - it launch CD Blank Finder with a message would you like to open from different choices of application.
3. Set as Video DVD and finalize it - it launch the DVD Player

In all 3 scenario i'm failed to import the video using Import from camera coz all files is unrecognized. Any help from anyone who use the same VDR-D310?

Should i use only DVD-RAM rather than DVD-RW?

Some how my miniDV with firewire work much better with my iMovie '08.

MacPro, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I don;t know if this helps--This is my first reply to attempt an answer-I had the same issue with my new camcorder from sony ( my old sony worked great with imovie)--as it turns out it is the usb vs. firewire issue. Imovie doesn;t recognize the usb --what a pain -hu? My solution was to download a movie convertor and then re-importing the footage--more steps-but possible. Hope my 2 cents helps.

I think after much search, and checking the box I've found reasonable answer why the DVD Camcorder would not work with iMovie '08.

As the list from the Apple website said, they have tested with NTSC format DVD Camcorder. It seems the one I've is PAL. it was written only in the box.

It might be since NTSC & PAL have different frames rate and powered supplied, iMovie '08 is only compatible with American Customer for now. If you're in Asia or Europe... we have to wait.

For me is unlucky; Goods sold are nonreturnable.

Although I've to wait from Japan about the issues raised to Panasonic, i think the answer would be use with the Bill Gates one.

oh ok; sory about that.

I was guessing since my old DV camcorder with NTSC format work fine with iMovie '08 and the new one is using DVD PAL.

And i read couple of article regarding DVD recording using PAL & NTSC there is issues regarding compatibility issues especially when the machine is made in Japan or US. So since apple did tested only with NTSC model only. I've make blunt assumption

With the distribution of product produce by third party like Sony and Panasonic are ship to Asia is normal PAL friendly product since the different between PAL and NTSC are the electrical current and frames; explained in this articles below:-

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-difference-between-ntsc-and-pal.htm

With USB cable, is much know that the power is are the main issues. I think if the DVD came with firewire i think this would not be and issues.

This all assumption; since apple support did ask me to go to other third party software to settle this which i find it really annoying. But the blame is not on them.

I did tested with DVD-image mention by Benjamin Fred, the result is still same. The Disk will return and yellow triangle sign.

If i'm using DVD-RAM it didn't required finalised however if DVD-RW with Video format, i've try finalise it however it will launch DVD Player.

Like the support document said, i've to close the dvd player and try import the files. It didn't work either.

I'm stuck with DVD_Camera detected but it give me the yellow triangle sign and grey unclick able files.

FYI: I'm able to use Quicktime MPEG-2 compatible format to open the files. It just curious why i can't direct import from the Camcorder straight to iMovie '08.

For iMovie 8 function, the features is so easy and fast. I didn't believe when people said it dumb, it just required some time to understand the new method and mastered it

Another discovery i found after trying couple of other thing; i can't copy the files from my DVD-RAW to my desktop? Why? The VRO files which can't be copy.

When i use handbrake software, it return unexpected error to me. Every single time.

Huh; weird. So it mean the record files is the one giving the error..

Another unusual thigk, every time i'm disconnected to the USB connection (either just plug off or choose eject option) to camcorder, it will disturb my WiFi USB (Ralink driver).

I wish the camcorder come with Firewire.

I'm not familiar with such devices, I'm still stuck in the 20th cent, preferring miniDV, using codes meant for editing.. 😉

as far as I understand the advice given on pages 9 ff in iM's manual, you have to use a finalized dvd-r, a usb connection (quit DVDplayer app if launched automatically), choos 'import from camera' and off you should go..

in the specs of your device, I read many different 'speeds'.. probably THAT is the hurdle to go.. avoid 'as much as a disk can fit', try any 'normal' speed...

you have all updates installed, esp. iM08.0.1 and QT7.2.?

and, just to avoid 'voodoo': you haven't any Quicktime plug-ins installed, as perian or divx 5....? those add-ons could cause odd behavior..

I've been able to import video from my Sony DVD 408 camcorder. I connect it with the USB cable and the DVD player recognizes it. Then I close the DVD player and open IMovie. I can then import the video. Before I bought the computer I brought my camcorder into an Apple Store and had a salesperson show me how to do it. They were very helpful. I was not willing to make the purchase until I could see that it was possible and not too difficult to import the video. I'm one of those very computer challenged people who IMovie08 was made for. So if I can do it, just about anybody can. I've had more success and fun editing my video than I expected.

I have the exact same problem. When I attach my Panasonic VDR-D310 (I use a use a finalized DVD-R ) I attach it to the system and DVD Player comes up. I close that and nothing happens... The weird thing is it worked once! I closed DVD Player and the import window came up. When I tried it again no success. Does anyone have any tips? Should I use a different type of disc?

My Hitachi DZ-HS501E also did not work with the HHD and DVD-RAM. With a finalised DVD-R it works. I did following: to cancel automatic start of the DVD player, choose System Preferences, CDs&DVDs, when you insert a video DVD, and then ignore.
That was the first thing.
Connect the camera with the finalised DVD-R inside and turn on the power. The camera should be recognised. After that, launch iMovie ('08) and wait a while. I got a message that it was recognised. The import screen finaly opened and the import started. The import is slow but my 10 minutes movie was imported, I think it took almost 10 minutes. After that I was able to edit.
I do'nt know if it works with the Panasonic 310, but I suppose if it worked once, it should work a second time.
Best
