Disk too slow (-10004) (Record) Please HELP!

Hey all,

I've recently started using Logic Express, my latest version is 7.2.3 (961.9).

I use an Edirol FA-66 Firewire interface (core audio enabled) and I plug in an AKG Perception 200 mic to record an acoustic guitar.

When recording audio, getting to about 2.20 I get the above message (-10004), this interrupts the recording.

My Audio driver preferences are:

Driver: FA-66 (0511)
IO Buffer Size: 128
Recording Delay: 0
Max tracks: 32
Larger Disk buffer is checked
24-bit is unchecked
Software Monitoring is checked.

The only mod I have made to these settings to try to solve my problem is changing the IO buffer size from 512 to 128, but I still get the same message.

Its really quite upsetting as I've spent 1000s of pounds on this setup, the disk cant be too slow for 1 track of audio surely?? Its a brand new disk 160gb with at least 90gb available, I also bought an extra gig of ram for recording purposes.

Please Help!

Macbook Dual Intel, Mac OS X (10.4.10), 2gb RAM, 160gb HD, Edirol FA-66

De-select "Larger Disk Buffer".
Set processor buffer range to medium.

Try 256 I/O buffer.

There's been several others with similar complaints using pretty much
the same hardware and software version (10.4.10)

Many would argue that for what your're doing, a 44.1 sample rate and 24-bit would be the better choice, I agree.

The thing is..., your computer should easily be able to handle at least a few tracks recorded to the internal drive.
I keep wondering if Journaling is part of the problem, surely the disk I/O
can't be that weak.

You machine should, indeed, be able to record a single track. There are many things that might get in the way including, as PanCenter said, Journaling. However the best thing you can do for yourself and your sanity is to get a separate external hard drive.

From memory, the MacBook doesn't have Firewire 800 so get yourself a decent USB external drive. You should be able to pick up a 500GB drive for £70 or so (check Dabs.com). That will improve things in the long run.

You might also like to try working with a USB Flash drive. I've had great success with a 2GB drive and, if you have one, it might help diagnose your problem. You could try it with any size, of course, just as long as it can cope with your file sizes. If you're going to buy one, make sure it's fast. USB2 is a must but even then, some are faster than others.

I wouldn't get a usb2 drive as a firewire 400 will be more suitable and faster.

However, if your interface is set at 96 should it not be changed to 44.1 if you're recording @ 44.1 in Logic? I don't have any experience with the edirol range though.

Again, i've used firewire drives with my powerbook setup and they tend to run much better than usb2 - something to do with firewire being better supported by macs than pc's and usb working better with pc's than mac's...

However, I've never needed to record one track onto an external HD and not my internal Powerbook drive at reasonable sample rates. I would suggest you make sure both Logic and the edirol are at the sample rate - 44.1 or 48 should be plenty IMHO.

If that doesn't work - get back to us here.

Hope that helps

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies.
I have tried all the driver parameter changes to no success. I have also tried the lowest sample rate on the edirol (44.1) and matched that on Logic.

I had everything set and during recording I had the system performace meter up, it didnt even flinch until 1:50 where I get 1/2 a second of white noise then the error message again... Quite frustrating.

I do have an 80gb freecom toughdrive which I can use. I have formatted for use on my mac. I used disk utility to do this, the drive I erased with Mac OS extended but it formatted it 'with journaling' anyway... I created a volume entitled 'Logic' (how original) and it is - hopefully - formatted with no journaling.
I cant seem to find how to use this drive for all my audio data? Could you help me set it up??

Thanks again for the responses.

PS : It doesn't shock me that this could be a 10.4.10 issue... 🙂

Good practice says you should always work with Project Folders. So, when you select File > New, you tick the "Create Project Folder" check box. You'll be prompted to set the project folder, into which all audio will be written.

If you're not working with Project Folders, press the A key when you're on the Arrange Window. That will prompt for recording path.

To remove a recording path, Audio > Audio Configuration then, on the local menu, Edit > Remove Record Path

This is way off norm considering you're recording a single track, the white noise sounds to me like a firewire error, loss of digital connection/sync.
I associate that kind of problem with the audio device or device driver.
Using latest driver from Edirol?

I guess it's possible you might get that sound if the system was recording and for some reason couldn't write to the drive because of a drive error or too much activity on the bus.

Have you tried the basic drive maintenence procedures? Repair Disk Permissions...etc. If you haven't yet, d'load Onyx for system maintenance.

Hi,
Thanks again everyone for your help.

I think I've solved the problem using my external hard drive as a dedicated audio drive.

The audio settings i'm now using are:

I/O buffer size : 1024
Large Disk Buffer : unchecked.

I also have the sample rates on the FA-66 and Logic set at 44.1

With these settings I was able to get 5:40 with no interruptions. I'll keep you updated if anything else goes wrong.

Right now it looks fixed......

Thanks again!
