Disappearing legends and unappliable colours...

With a fresh spreadsheet and a newly generated table I can show the legend, and drag chart colours (3D (etched metal) or 2D) onto 2D bar charts.

But on a spreadsheet i've been working on for an hour or so, legends are never displayed - what I assume is that their X or Y position is offscreen (I've tried selecting all and aligning top left but I can't get them back). Secondly, I cannot drag 3D colours (etched metal) into charts; 2D colours are fine but not what I need.

I thus have to copy'n'paste the data table into a fresh file, and remake the chart from scratch, then it works. Anyone else?

I have not copy'n'pasted from any Excel files - which causes Numbers to be incapable of copying charts to the clipboard as image files.
