Fonts appear faded

I recently helped my parents buy a new iMac. I went through setting it up last week with them on the phone. After that, the font appearance on-screen has become faded and/or choppy, like parts of letters being cut off.
I went through the likely suspects with them using my iMac Intel G5 (previous model), making sure the system, appearance and monitor settings were correct. Changing fonts didn't seem to make a difference.
Am I missing something obvious? Thanks.

I would start by checking a few things:

1. In system prefs>displays, do they have millions of colors and the highest resolution set?

2. In system prefs>universal access, has someone moved the contrast slider? Is anything else turned on in there?

John,
If your parents could take a screen shot of the letters in question,
and email the pic to you,
you could then upload them to a service like photobucket and post it here.

(Screen shot can be done by pressing the Apple button,
along with the shift key and the number 3 key.
It will result in a picture png, which they can email to you.)

I did do some searches for "faded fonts" or "fonts appear incorrectly" and so-on, but didn't come across that specific article.

I will have my parents try it, if they haven't already been helped by tech support or their local Apple Store. Do you think this applies to all system font usage, as the fading/chopping was occurring in many places?

I will let you know what we find as soon as I can talk with them again. Thanks.
