All SuperDrives are not equally "Super" -- even drives with the same
manufacturer and model number have different specs for speed and
supported media types, depending on the iMac vintage. I don't know
whether the differences are in hardware or simply drive firmware, but
google turns up many discussions of drive firmware hacks -- mainly
for the purpose of eliminating DVD region restrictions. I haven't had
time to explore the details (yet).
