As mentioned above, you can port your old number but one important warning.
I called Verizon BEFORE I bought my iPhone to make sure that I could port a certain number on my family plan which still had two years left on the contract.
The CSR said yes, they would just give me a new number for that phone.
When I called to get that new number, I was told that by porting the number which still had time left on its contract, I essentially cancelled the account and was on the hook for the $175 early termination fee.
I protested loudly and since there was a call on my bill to CS before I bought my phone, and the rep did log that call, (although w/o details) they finally waived the fee.
So, I would strongly advise you to activate by phone instead of online if you still have a contract with your previous provider.
