Custom Icon goes with usb peripheral from Mac to different Mac

Not as far as I can tell. The booted machine is what stores the custom icon. So you'll have to put a copy of the icon onto the flash drive, hook it up to each computer, and reset it there.

Yes, because that icon is defined on the CD. If you want the same capability, you need to set it on the flash drive.

I took a look at the Adobe PS CS CD, and it did the same thing I do with some of my internal drives, namely, it has a custom icon on the CD ".VolumeIcon.icns" which displays when the CD mounts, just as my own ".VolumeIcon.icns" custom icons do for internal drives. However, when I added a custom .VolumeIcon.icns to my firewire drive the custom icon did NOT display. I tried quitting the Finder and relaunching it, no custom icon. Shutdown the computer and the firewire drive, next time I restarted the firewire drive and it mounted it was still displaying the regular firewire drive icon. Don't know if USB drives would behave like my firewire drive or like a CD, but I expect they will behave like the firewire drive.

Interesting. I've set custom icons on mounted FW volumes and they always display with remounted.

How did you set the icon in the first place?

As I understand it, when you change the volume icon using the usual copy & paste (the same as for any normal file/folder) it is stored in the root of the volume as a hidden file called (as someone mentioned) .VolumeIcon.icns which should then work on any Mac. I've done this with USB drives without any problems.

By the way, it seems it's not enough to simply create the icon file manually. There is a file attribute that has to be set (/Developer/Tools/SetFile -a C <folder/volume>) for any folder/volume with a custom icon, otherwise the file is quietly ignored.

I thought perhaps that might indeed be the problem with mine, so I checked the attributes and sure enough it was c rather than C. So changed it to C, relaunched the Finder and Bingo! The drive is now displaying its custom icon. I haven't checked it with another computer yet, but I think that should do it. Mystery solved! Thanks Chris.

Install XCode Tools, then use the SetFile command to change the custom icon attribute.
