OS 10.3.9

Will the new iPod classic work work with OS 10.3.9? I know that the official requirements say you need tiger. iTunes 7.4 seems to run just fine on my computer.

According to the iTunes 7.4 page these are the system requirements:
Macintosh Requirements

* Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later or Mac OS X 10.4.7 or later required for iTunes
* Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later required for iPhone
* 500MHz G3 processor or better
* QuickTime 6.5.2 or later
* 256MB RAM
* Combo/SuperDrive to burn CDs
* Broadband Internet connection (DSL/Cable/LAN) for buying and streaming music

No mention of 10.4+ being needed to sync with iPods.

I'm not going to buy tiger with leopard just around the corner. But I'm still not even sure if my system will run leopard...

From what I have read about leopard you might need to have a 1ghz G4 or greater to have a smooth running machine, not to mention to max out your video and computer RAM on an older machine to get full use of all of its abilities. It is universal Binary last I checked so maybe with some tweaking of the OS and the removal of the useless code material you might get it to run under a older G3. The only way for you to get the full use of leopard is to buy a newer machine that comes with it. They you have to buy update software to run under the Little Endian x86 "Mactels" because Rosetta's "translation" (Another word for emulation) to run your older software will be very slow. Also no OS 9 compatibility because classic is gone.

*Wonder why they have 10.4 on the product page*
It's kind of screwy.
I have identified this to Apple a while ago but so far, not response or clarification.

It actually states, "Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later or Mac OS X 10.4.7 or later required for iTunes"
As I read it, this means it will work with 10.3.9 and 10.4.7 thru 10.4.10 but not with 10.4.0 thru 10.4.6.

As somebody who is a technical writer and web developer working for a "marketing weasel" company, I can tell you that your assumption is so much hot air and oversimplification.

I also have just had this experience. After waiting so long to jump onto the (full) iPod bandwagon, I was somewhat disappointed. See screengrab:

I've also summarized the discussions here and forwarded the matter onto TUAW, hopefully they can draw more attention to this matter. Any other options other than:

a) wait for a fix (is this even likely?)
b) complain to apple
c) return iPod classic to Apple Store
d) wait for leopard and pray your mac runs it well
e) accept defeat and buy 10.4
