iPhone Battery Heats Up and Drains

My iPhone is about a month and a half old. When it is plugged into the computer, it is fine. But when I unplug it, sometimes it gets extremely hot and the battery drains. This has happened a few times already, but the past three days, it happened every day. What happened two days ago and yesterday is, I didn't use it at all during the work day. Then when I left work, the phone was really hot and it had drained to 10%. Today, the same thing is happenning. I charged it overnight, didn't use it at all today and then when I went to lunch, it was drained almost half way and was really hot.

Any ideas? Is it going to blow up on me? Also, is there anything to fix this, my battery life is down to virtually nothing without even using the phone.

Hi phxcreative, and Welcome to Discussions!

I would definitely say this is not normal, and could be potentially dangerous. I would back up your data and stop using your iPhone. Your warranty should cover this issue - simply go to http://www.apple.com/support/iphone and use the self-service request form, call Apple at 1-800-APL-CARE, or return it to the place you purchased it.

Sorry, I don't know how to embed a link to a previous post.

My iPhone was also getting hot and not fully re-charging. This process (which I did only halfway the first time, didn't improve much, but then I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS and completed it) solved the poor recharging, stopped the overheating and now it holds a charge for days.

This is from a previous post:
Cycle the Battery!!!!

I have had my iPhone since day one. Of course, I took it home and immediately activated it. I did leave it connected to the computer (and umounted) for several hours before using it. After that, I didn't pay any more attention to the battery. I charged it every night.

I then began reading articles about people complaining about the battery, especially the battery meter. They complained that some iPhones are not charging fully. They said that when the iPhone is fully charged, the battery meter (the meter you see when iPhone is connected to the USB Dock charger) should be green all the way across and should also be "glowing."

That is when I noticed that my battery was NOT fully charging. The large battery meter was green ALMOST all the way across, but not quite. There was just a little sliver of the meter that was not green. Also the meter was not "glowing" when fully charged.

The articles I read seemed to suggest that the problem was software releated and not the actual battery, so I really didn't give the problem much thought. But then, I talked to a Mac Genius buddy who insisted that I cycle the battery.

I followed his instructions which I will detail below:

1.) I ran the battery all the way down until iPhone shut itself off (this is a safety feature and will not harm the battery).

2.) I charged the battery fully (about 8 hours, although 4 would have been sufficient). I also powered the iPhone off after connecting it to the dock charger.

3.) The next morning, I took the iPhone off the charger and left it turned off. I let it sit for about 8 hours turned off in order to set the resistance level of the battery.

4.) I ran the battery all the way down again last night.

5.) I gave it a second complete charge while I slept last night. This morning, I have a fully charged battery AND the battery meter is green all the way across and is glowing!!!

It only happened to me once.

I let the battery drain completely dead.
I then plugged it in and let the phone charge overnight. (phone off)
Next morning, turned it on and it's been great ever since.

In fact, right now, I didn't charge it last night (Sept 5)
So, since it's 3am of the following day.. I'm currently on:

5 Hours, 14 Minutes of Usage
1 Day, 14 Hours of Standby

This has just happened to me today. I didn't use my phone any differently than before. By 1 PM, I noticed the phone was hot and my battery juice was really low (after a night of charging as usual). This is the second time it's happened. I thought maybe the ipod music part of it had been playing (and I didn't notice), but I checked - nothing had been playing to drain the battery.

I know bluetooth and wi-fi drains battery juice more than normal, but I didn't do anything in particular today than the other days. I usually have blue tooth and wi-fi on, but it didn't drain *this fast*. I'm at work now, and my battery is in the red. My phone is shut off. I'll try the battery cycling trick, but it just makes me wonder if something else is causing this: heat + rapid battery drain.

Anybody have this problem?

Are those that are having this heated battery issue using a iPhone case? My iPhone got really hot for the first time and drained my battery to half in 30 minutes when I used my black rubber nCase for the first time in months and had the phone in my pocket. I immediately took the phone out of the case and laid it down on the table to cool off. I went back to having the iPhone naked and have'nt had it heat up since.

Yes, I am using a case, and read about this...however I have been using a case since I bought it and this heating up/battery drain problem has been sporadic without any changes on my part. It's as if something in the iphone (hardware vs software) that caused it to "run").

I've considered possible causes: wi-fi usage, blue tooth usage, ipod playing, phone case...but I hadn't altered any of those variables to explain the heat and rapid drain.

It is normal for iPhone to get warm when running a CPU-intensive application. It is not normal to get warm when idle.

I've had this as well. It's usually after using an Internet application (Safari, Stocks, Weather, etc.) where there was a failed update. There seems to be a stuck thread that not only maxes the CPU but keep the radio transmitting as well.

Hold the phone next to a speaker/radio/landline/etc. and you should be able to hear the inductive noise from the GSM transmitter. Periodic beeps are OK but constant transmitting (when the phone is otherwise idle) indicates a problem.

I've resolved the problem temporarily by switching to Airplane Mode until the transmissions stop, which usually takes about 30 seconds. The next time I have a failed data retrieval, it will happen again.

Are you automatically checking email at regular intervals? It's possible that it could also lead to a stuck thread (and thus discharge the battery).

I agree...it is not normal behavior.

I am all for work arounds when it comes to features that are currently missing, but gang, if your phone is overheating and draining, SOMETHING IS WRONG INSIDE THE PHONE and the only thing that you are doing with the resets and restores, is avoiding the problem, when you should just go get it repaired or replaced so you can enjoy your phone without worrying if it is going to make it to lunch time or not!

Time to visit the Apple store. Get yourself a working phone!
