Playing music on iPHONE in car

there is another possibility. if you have aux in on your radio, you can use the same dock you use to sync your iphone to your computer. if you look at the back of the dock you'll see a line out. just get a audio line with 2 male ends and you should be fine. oh yea, the line out on the dock works with any lines, no need to buy any special adp.

If your car has a standard 3.5mm aux in connector for your stereo you can get a nice charger from Monster or Belkin that has a 3.5mm aux out connector. Plug any 3.5mm cable from the charger to the aux in on your stereo and then whenever you plug your iphone in it's automatically also ready to play through your stereo.

I'm using this setup in my honda civic hybrid, works great. One plug and I'm charging and listening to music via my stereo. And happily, unlike my ipods, the charger doesn't create static interference with the music playback.

If your stereo is only AM/FM/XM and a cd player then you're stuck with FM transmitters, which generally smoke the big one. Might be time to get a new stereo 🙂

Just DON'T get an Alpine CDA-9820xm unit. I got one for my truck and it's HORRENDOUS.. Yes it has XM. Yes it connects to my iphone/ipods. That's where it's functionality ENDS.

An example: To search playlists you have to "Search: Folders" (since they couldn't be bothered to use the same terminology as the item they're supporting I guess). But to play a playlist in random mode you have to "MIX: Disc" where if you want to play the entire ipod randomly you "MIX: Folder". Wait... didn't I just search folders for playlists? And what disc is it I'm randomly playing? What is going on here?

How ***-backwards is that? And that's only one of MANY annoyances with it. Don't buy.

I have the iPod cassette adapter and FM transmitter and both work well. The sound from the cassette adapter is better IMO.

You dont need the expensive ones from the Apple.com site look for the cheap white ones. I got the cassette adapter, FM transmitter, car charger and dual lighter adapter for $30.

They all work with the iPhone BUT you might have to trim down the adpater to make it fit.

I have a VW Beetle with the direct connection but when I plug in my iPhone the sound isn't coming thru the car speakers - it's coming through the iPod. How do I get it to come thru the car sound system? On a regular iPod it's ok but on the iPhone.

I bought for the iPod can't be inserted deep enough into
The iPhone receptacle to fully engage.
This is because the iPhone receptacle is too deeply
recessed into the curved surface of the phone casing.

I imagine there is a unique cable available for the iPhone,
but I haven't looked for one yet. For now, I just bring the
iPod along. Still, it would have been nice if the iPhone
jack was compatable with standard aux cables...

Belkin makes a $10 adapter that they sell at the Apple store that will make your iPhone jack work with any existing earphones or stereo mini jack cable. That is what you need to make your existing cable work with the iPhone.

I've got a 2007 VW GTI with the factory iPod adaptor, works great with both my older 3rd gen iPod and the iPhone. Only "complaint" is to doesn't display track info, but really no big deal. The way the VW iPod adaptor work is like a aux 6-disc CD player, so only 6 palylists can be set up (using numbers 1-5, 6 is everything on the iPod or iPhone). I'd check for a factory or after market iPod adaptor and install that rather then a FM adaptor or using an "Aux" input some radio's have.

Are you using the VW "Aux" input? or the VW Ipod adaptor? if using the Aux input you'll need an adaptor to take the 3-input iPhone jack to 2-input style.
The headphone jacks on the iPod and iPhone are different, iPhone has 3 connectors (3rd one for the mic), iPod only two (L/R speakers)

opps, one advatage of the factory or aftermaket iPod adaptors is they also will charge the iPod / iPhone while your driving. With the iPhone you can even use the other features while the iPhone is playing songs over the stero. With the iPod adaptor in my GTI the stering wheel audio controls control volume & track selection and playlist selection.

Yeah, this is great advice. I have a new BMW 328XI. Connecting the Belkin Mini-stereo plugs into the aux input in the armrest storage compartment and directly into the iPhone did NOT work, but your advice of using the iPhone dock worked like a charm. Just connect the cable to the dock or cradle rather than the directly into the iPhone.

Depends on what kind of radio you have. Most iPod adapters should work with the iPhone. I have an Alpine radio that has a direct connection to an iPod with a cable supplied by Alpine.

I use the Monster cassette adapter and the sound quality is excellent. Of course this only helps you if you have a tape deck.
