What does .dmg mean?

Hi HREsquivelO: Quite simply put it is an abbreviation. "Disk Image" becomes .dmg just as executeable become .exe

Why? Who knows. That's like asking who came up the "tree" to describe one and why, or any name we use to describe a particular object. It's likely just the simple notion of pulling letters out of the description of what it is. Disk i Ma Ge.

There is at least a bit of logic behind most file extension names, such as:

.exe Executable
.com Command
.doc Document
.qxd Quark XPress Document
.ai Adobe Illustrator

On and on.

It's a disk image file. Opening it will make the contents available as a mounted virtual disk.
