My trackpad is sluggish vertically

Hey all,

Just purchased my macbook today, and am experiencing trackpad issues. The button works fine, but the trackpad is sluggish and innacurate. Especially when moving the mouse up or down.

IT will slow down severely when tracking upwards/downwards, taking several strokes to get to the top of the screen, even though I have the tracking speed set to the fastest possible setting. I've played with all the settings in the keyboard/mouse system settings, but they have no effect.

I have read other discussions, and read Apple's response that it's dirty or something else... but this computer is HOURS old and I am experiencing this problem on a very clean computer.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a software conflict? Is it a hardware issue? It's very frustrating to have a brand spanking new computer and have a trackpad that's worse than the on my old PB Onyx.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me there is a reasonable solution for this.

Use an external mouse. I have the same problem. First I thought that I am touching the trackpad with the thumb of my left hand, but it seems that beeing too close with any part of the other hand makes triggers the coupling capacitance to make the cursor to jump. Would be nice if we had control over it so to adjust it accordingly.

I spent the better part of the week wondering if my trackpad was an issue. What I have found is that a light touch does the trick. Whether scrolling vertical or horizontal, right clicking (two fingers) etc. A nice light touch makes for a very responsive touchpad. My experience with it has improved 1000%. It is touch sensitive, but not pressure sensitive in any positive way. Heavy pressure seems to inhibit its sensitivity.

Thank you for the response. I hate to say it, but the pressure I'm applying doesn't seem to be the problem. I've tried playing with how I use the trackpad, doesn't make a difference. Sometimes it moves slowly, sometimes for a long stroke it will barely move across the screen.

Very annoying.

Thanks for the response, any other ideas out there? I think I am gonna take my computer back to the story on Monday... VERY frustrating.

Martin,
I find the "get a usb/bluetooth mouse" solution unacceptable, as I do that article by apple. This idea that my hands are dirty, or that I am using the trackpad incorrectly, or jewelry is the culprit is ridiculous to someone who's been using mac laptops since the 520c came out. They should take responsibility for the fact that, after exectuting every solution available (PRAM reset, cleaning trackpad, using the trackpad correctly), this is a problem of their creation.

Getting a mouse ignores the fact that there's still a problem with the computer! A laptop is exactly what it says it is... for use on the lap. A mouse, for somene who doesn't have the space available (aka, I'm on a plane all the time), isn't a solution for someone bought a computer (less than two days ago, mind you) expecting one of it's funamental parts to work.

The solution of "ignore the problem by getting a mouse" is tantamount to saying "it's okay for you to sell me something that doesn't work".

I've continued to fool around with the computer, and am now experiencing keys that sometimes do not register that they've been pressed (I've had to go back several times through the writing of this post to correct the errant keystrokes).

This piece of brand new junk is going back to the store on monday. They've made this my problem at my work this weekend (use my laptop for work). So I'm going to make it their problem again, until they get me a machine that works. TWO DAYS, and I'm having this kind of problem? Ridiculous.

They don't build them like they used to...

(sorry for the frustrated tone... )

I took my computer back to applestore... and within moments of touching my computer, the tech evaluated it as a dud.

They gave me a new one, and low and behold... no trackpad issues anymore.

He said these trackpad keyboard issues are not all that uncommons, so I suggest if you're having the problem... and you've washed your hands as the apple website speculates might be the problem...
Go return/get it serviced. It's probably apples fault.
