Pics turned from landscape to portrait-all I see is a black circle and "!"

Since using iPhoto 08 (v 7.0.2) all new imported pictures that I turn from landscape to portrait are not shown. Instead, I see a black circle with a white exclamation mark/point. Does anyone have the same problem or know a way to solve this?

Interestingly when syncing the pics on my G5 iPod, these pics also are not synced!

Cheers, Bodo.

The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.

The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder.

Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?

If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

Thanks for your help but rebuilding the library did not change anything.

When clicking on a image the "!" still appears. When going to the editing mode of the same pic, everything is fine.

And, the whole phaenomenon is only with pictures that are turned from landscape to portrait. Still strange...

Bodo:

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try selecting one of the problem files and do a Revert to Original on it. That will force a new modified file to be created. Maybe it will display correctly.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I get both options. When clicking on SHOW FILE a folder pops up which is part of the MODIFIED.
When clicking on SHOW ORIGINAL a folder pops up which is part of the ORIGINALS of the iPhoto Lib.

Again it all just happens with pics that had to be turned from landscape to portrait.

Using iPhoto '08 (7.1) I just added some brand new photos some were taken in landscape and other in portrait. They were imported vertically, in portrait mode, as they should be, but when added to a new slide show, without ever being edited I select the image in the slide show at the top bar but their image in the middle of the screen seems to briefly be present and then goes the "!" image.

What am I doing wrong? This is my first experience of this and it happened right after upgrading to Leopard. As for the landscape picture and the portrait one in edit mode all the photos seem to be just fine!

Any thoughts,

Stav

Hi, I'm experiencing a similar problem with all my pictures. Everything was dandy until I inserted a CD to install editing software for my sony ericsson cell phone. This CD was suppost to install some sort of software for music and image transfering between my phone and the computer but instead of installing any type of software poof all of a sudden all of my thumbnails on iphoto turned gray and when i clicked on the image..... a big exlamation point - ! What do I do? I tried everything pretty much. What happened. Please someone enlighten me.

Thank You

A question for the makers of the CD, I would have thought.

If you've tried rebuilding as directed above, then you may have a corrupted library: Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file. If not, then you'll need to create and populate a new library.

To create and populate a new library:

Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.

In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'

Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop

Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.

Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.

When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.

In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
