No video/audio at www.optonline.net website.

First time on this forum. When selecting a video at www.optonline.net, the video player downloads, but then the player screen turns white and no video appears. Same result with using Netscape and Firefox. I called optonline and they said it should work with the Mac but needs the plug-in for the Windows Media Player. I do have Flip4Mac as well as the WMP. All other videos on all other websites work fine on my Mac, and it used to work on my Mac before some upgrades were installed. I visited an Apple Store recently and they were also unable to view videos on that web site using several of their in-store Macs. Could be a compatibility problem resulting from new versions of the different software programs involved. Would appreciate some feedback.

iMac Intel, Mac OS X (10.4.10), Safari 3.0.3, Netscape 7.2, Firefox 2.0.0.6

Hi Jerry

Welcome to Apple Discussions

As I'm not a subscriber, I'm not able to access all content on optonline. However, I was able to view a trailer. Are you able to do so? If not, perhaps installing a copy of Microsoft's new plug-in: Silverlight will make a difference.

After installing, restart Safari and try the site.

Regarding Windows Media Player, unless you run the application in Rosetta mode, it's basically of no value being on your machine. Flip4Mac allows WMV files to play on a Intel Mac. Also, it helps in the older machines where content has gone beyond the last (and final) version of Windows Media Player for Mac.

I'm not sure which upgrades, but I think I was reloading Flash. The optonline.net website says I need both WMP and Flash to view their videos. I have both WMP and Flash, but still not able to view videos. I don't understand what loading Safari in Rosetta has to do with WMP. I've tried to view videos via Safari with and without Rosetta. No luck either way. Nor can I view the optonline.net videos via Netscape or Firefox either, which have no Rosetta options. As I've said, never had a problem with any other website videos.

If you haven't already done so, remove from your Internet Plug-ins folder the Windows Media Player plug-in, as Flip4Mac is sufficient for viewing the WMV content.

I mentioned Rosetta, as you would need to be in Rosetta mode to use the Windows Media Player. The down-side - Safari runs slower in Rosetta mode. Hence, Flip4Mac gives you the best of both worlds, i.e. viewing WMV content, plus allowing Safari to operate in native mode.

If you are not having any luck viewing this content in Netscape or Firefox, then in all liklihood (I'm making an assumption here) the content you are wanting to view is not Mac compatible.

Thank you for your reply Hawaiian_Starman. I removed the WMV Plugin from my Internet Plugin Folder. No change, still cannot view optonline.net videos. I still have two Flip4Mac WMV Plugins in my Internet Plugin folder. They are: Plugin.plugin and Plugin.webplugin. Do you think I need both? Should I try removing one or the other? Don't want to cause other problems, since all else is fine.

I am not a member either, but looks fine to me. Try this:

These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything:

Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install ( or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:

RealPlayer from http://uk.real.com/player/

Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)

Perian from http://perian.org/

Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash

In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).

In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).

Now repair permissions and restart.

The world should now be your oyster!

You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
