CASE FOR 80GB IPOD CLASSIC

I want to buy a case for my 80gb ipod classic (iskin evo3) .... and when it says 30gb or 80gb...does that mean that they haven't updated to the new version of the ipod? or would it not make a difference in size?

thanks in advance for your help!!

MBP (3 GB RAM, 120 GB hard drive, 2.33 GHz); 30 GB iPod Video; AX, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

In doing some research on the new Classic, I learned that the Classic 80gb is about the same thickness as the 5th gen 30gb. So the case will fit.

Classic 80gb: 80GB model
Height: 4.1 inches (103.5 mm)
Width: 2.4 inches (61.8 mm)
Depth: 0.41 inch (10.5 mm)
Weight: 4.9 ounces (140 grams

5th Gen 30gb
Width
2.4 in
Depth
0.4 in
Height
4.1 in
Weight
4.8 oz

The specifications page available on the iPod store page lists the following:

30gb 5th gen: 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.43

80gb Classic: 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.41

The new 80gb Classic is 0.02 thinner than the 30gb 5th gen video. That's according to the above referenced page. That's a negligible amount but a difference. I have the Belkin metal front, acrylic back case that I LOVE is the reason I looked at the specs. If I have to, I'll shim up the case in order to use it with the new Classic 80gb. I bought an extra one I think so much of it. OR, put a clear plastic film over it.

I just received my 160 and promptly put it into the iSkin eVo3 caes. It fits snuggly. I don't notice any problems with it fitting. This is is the good news.

The sort of bad news is that the classic's scroll wheel is different somehow and doesn't always scroll properly through the iSkin's rubber. I sort of figured out that you have to first hold your thumb on the wheel for a second or two before you begin scrolling, as if the classic needs to feel its presence. Then you can begin scrolling and the ipod senses the thumb properly, though not as accurately as if the iskin wasn't on. If you take your thumb off the iskin for a few seconds you will have to retrain it again by waiting a couple secs before scrolling. A bit annoying but so far not a deal breaker for me. I'm more annoyed with the iSkin's magnet to lint/dust/hair.

BTW. i left the original plastic wrapping on the ipod before placing it in the iskin. The wrapping doesn't affect strolling when the ipod is not wearing its skin, but maybe the extra layer does make a difference when the iskin is on.

however- your ipods are reasonable, but not cheap. I just replaced my 2nd generation 2GB ipod w/an 80GB classic. I need a portfolio case; and NOT one for $100!!! In the future, work out the details with Belkin or INCASE to have the cases available at the same time the products are available. My ipod is an investment and means alot to me now, I'd like to protect it.

or better yet design the ipods so they are more durable so that when you drop it it doesn't kill the LCD screen for example. I wonder how the new aluminum case handles drops. I hate having a case. You want to show off and see for yourself the beauty of apple's design, yet you can't because as soon as you get it you hide it in a much uglier case. This shouldn't be necessary.

can you please clarify? your ipod broke on its own or because the shield didn't protect it? And if it didn't protect the ipod why get another shield? or did they replace the ipod too? Or did they just send you a brand new shield even though there was nothing wrong with it?

The video on their website shows just the shield for the LCD, but how do you put on the full body ones? Is it one piece of plastic, or is it a piece for each edge? And I assume it only protects from scratches and not from drops? Personally the only reason i use a case is to protect the ipod in case it gets dropped.
