Can I stop Safari from suggesting URLs as I type?

I asked somebody at an Apple genius bar, but he couldn't tell me: When I type in a URL, how do I get Safari to NOT provide a drop-down list of URL's I've previously visited in an attempt to guess where I want to go, presumably to save me time. This usually costs me time: If I made a typo the last time I entered a URL (www.cnn.coom) Safari invites me to make the same mistake again and again. And I'm not crazy about the fact that if I'm in a public situation, anybody walking by as I enter a URL gets more information than they should. I can clear my history in the history menu, but this does not seem to get rid of Safari's suggestions. I notice that Firefox works the same way, so it must something with the Mac OSX, but I haven't found a way to disable it. The whole thing reminds me of an annoying friend who's always trying to finish my sentences for me -- I just want him to shut up and listen. Help!
