Notification sounds have disappeared

I have been doing some research into the discussion pages to see if anyone else has had the same problem, and it appears I am not alone. When using iChat, my notification sounds have disappeared - when someone comes on/offline, when I open iChat (I don't get that whhhooooopppp noise), when I have an incoming chat I don't get the ringing sound (particularly annoying for my UK based friends and me when I miss them!) etc.
I have done the following to try and rectify the problem, but to no avail.
Trashed the audio preference file. Checked and adjusted the Audio MIDI settings to 44100. Verified and repaired permissions. Opened Garageband and closed it again. All software is up to date....Still nothing - unless I restart in which case it works once or twice and then falls silent again.
Anyone got any other ideas?
And if anyone is interested in another problem, I have the recurring issue of the phantom 'submarine' in iChats as well - this only just started recently, but it's so loud and irritating that I have to cancel the chats and try and start again. Recently I've given up video calling (although it hasn't mattered cause I keep missing my friends due to my silent iChat alerts!)
Any help/ideas on either/both subjects would be much appreciated!

No luck I'm afraid, but thanks for the suggestion. It looks as though I have also lost my trash sound - both moving files to and emptying as well as moving files on the desktop - no sound when they are placed into or copied to folders like there should be. Forgot to mention in my last post that I have also checked all the sound settings, both in iChat and system prefs.
Anyone else got any ideas? I'm lost on this one!

You could try this:

Apple menu>system preferences>sound>sound effects>tick the box that plays the alert sounds of the interface.

Also move the alert volume slider a little bit, this could bring sound back if the above didn't work.

(I have a Dutch interface, the correct translation might be different.)

Just to make sure, you've tried all these settings and still no sound?:

iChat>preferences>alerts>play sound box has been ticked?
In the same window have you moved the volume slide bar and still no sound?
Have you tried to highlight a buddy in your list and from the top menu:
contacts(buddies)>info>alerts>play sound>select an event and the sound you would like to go with it?

If these have been tried and it still does not work:

Quit all open applications, open Quicktime from the dock.
Hold the command(Apple key) and press "K".
You'll see the A/V control panel for Quicktime, volume slide bar to the right.
Now select the iChat icon in the dock and with iChat open, click on the Quicktime icon in the dock once more.
You will see the A/V control panel with the volume slide bar now on the left (mute).
Hold the command(Apple) key and press "K", (the A/V window disappears), keep holding the command key and press "K" again, the window appears again and now the volume should be to the right (max).
Check if the sound effects are working now in iChat.

For me this somehow works for audio issues, (or maybe I have audio issues because of the toggling).
Don't ask me why, it works when there is no sound in quicktime movies in safari, or when you have no sound at all.

It is more that we have not found the answer as we can not replicate or have not had the same problem.

The suggestions we have made are the most likely fixes at present.

I would also recommend checking basic maintenance things such as Cron Scripts and Repairing Permissions

Amanda, I've been having the exact same problem as you—iChat sounds disappearing soon after startup while all other computer sounds work fine. I thought that Leopard would fix the issue, but it didn't. I don't have a solution, but I did find a little trick: if you go into iChat>Preferences>Alerts and select any item from the pop up sound list, it will play, and subsequently iChat will play all sounds normally. I don't know how long the sounds will stick around, but I thought this might be interesting to you just in case.
