Sleep mode

I've been having trouble getting my display to go to sleep. I leave the G5 on 24/7 and had the controls set so the the computer would never go to sleep and the displays go to sleep after 5 min. It's been working fine for several years. Now it the displays won't go to sleep unless I set the display to sleep after 1 min.
The Apple tec said I should set the computer to go to sleep after 15 min and the display to go to sleep after 15 min. I asked why do I have to put the computer to sleep if it's been working the way I had it set up-never put the computer to sleep. He said "Because".
Has anyone run into the sleep problem and how did it get resolved and what is the pros and cons of never puting the computer to sleep?

I have the same problem, although it is the CPU that will not sleep. I have tried everything i have read in these forums,including deleting all startup programs, disconnecting all peripherals. I spent days on this. and was just about to buy a new iMac when i thought I would try and install the original OS 10.3 instead of OS 10.4.1. Problem gone. My G5 works like it should.

I think apple do this purposely to get us to buy new Macs, 10.4.1 is just an update to ruin our older macs. I am going to ask them to pay me for the time and effort i put in trying to troubleshoot.

am having the same problems that everyone else is having. I have been running my G5 for 3 yrs with no problem. I press the sleep button and it goes right to sleep. I touch the keyboard or mouse it wakes up. GREAT.... Then I install 10.4 and update to .10 and now sleep doesn't work, fan kicks in after a few minutes and takes off..I also have tried ALL tips located on here with no luck. Defiently a OS issue. Come on Apple address this and put out a fix.

kalika1130,

First, Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk. You should do this before every update.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.4.10 Combo update. Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you! The non-Intel update is linked.

Cheers!
DALE
p.s. If that doesn't do it post back.

Dale,
I did the Disk Utility and it showed everything ok. Ran the Combo update and it did fix the problem. Thank you for that. Since my posting I have run across a few other issues that have happened since I first installed 10.4.10. I cannot import my mail from mail and my dvd drive isn't letting me install certain software form dvd. I can play all movies and other dvd's, just certain dvd's that once worked now do not. I know the dvd's are good as they will work on other mac. I know wrong forum for these topics but thought you might have idea.
Thanks again,
chris

Try this. Open your mail program, go to title bar. click on the Maibox heading (right next to View ). Scroll down to the bottom of the list that comes up, and click on Rebuild. This worked for some issues I had. If that doesn't do it , post back and I'll tell you about deleting plists.

Resetting the PRAM has helped other users with DVD reading issues. Normally no DVD's show up when this is suggested.

Let us know if you need help with cleaning in the drive.

Welll I spoke to soon on the sleep fix. It worked a couple of times but it is now back to doing what it was. I have reinstalled the fix later today and this time it doesn't fix it.

I have tried the Rebuild in Mail, still doesn't fix it. Actually when I save emails for exporting as Raw Message Source it doesn't add the extension .mbox. I know it use to as I have done this before a few times before I upgraded to 10.4.10 The only reason I upgraded was for Adobe CS3. Everything was running great never had ANY issues.

I have also tried resetting the PRAM still no luck. I order a new drive today, will see if still have problem then.

I have been transfering everything to my backup drive and saving all address and bookmarks and etc to do a clean install just can't get mail to export and have TOO many I need to keep for work.. At this point maybe that will help. I welcome any other ideas.
Thanks
Chris

Well, here are some more sleep tips if you need them;
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.

If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.

If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.

If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).

If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.

Hope this helps!
P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"

Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.

tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.

Here's more;
On a G5 resetting the PMU sometimes help sleep issues. Some G5's use the SMU procedure, depending on model.
I also have these few remaining tips; one is a repeat;

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:

-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--
(username is your name or System Administrators name)

-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.

Dale,
I have no trouble putting the mac to sleep, it is waking it back up.It goes to sleep after a few minutes the fan kicks in and takes off. I have to force shutdown the mac. I have tried those suggestion early on once I discover the problem with no luck. Tried it all. Hoping when I restore and reinstall everything that it will work.

I found a way around the import Mail problem. You can go you user/library/mail/mailboxes and copy all needed folder to my backup drive. Then I can open each message and then select message/move to and put them back in my Mail.

Thank you for your suggestions. Yea I am sure it is not USb. This morning I removed everything but original mouse and keyboard and went through everything again and it is still doing the same thing. At this point I am just going to wipe everything and start over with a fresh install. I have so much crap on here it would probably be a good idea anyways.

Thanks again for everything...

Chris
