What is an SMBD process?

I have been looking at Application Monitor to work out why my Mac is running so slowly that it's impossible to use and I notice dozens of SMBD processes. What are these and could they be responsible for the infuriating slowdown?

Mini Mac, Mac OS X (10.4.8), 1GB RAM

I'm not knowledgable enough to explain in detail about SMBD processes but doing a quick Google search for SMBD processes turned up alot of information pertaining to the issue of multiplying SMBD processes such as:
