I have a 4:3 27" CRT TV with component video in, but a maximum resolution of 480i. If I buy a tv, will it work right out of the box? Can it support 4:3, or will I have to use it in letterbox form?
On my 4:3 HD TV I have to "zoom" to use the full screen, but I am using the 780i settings. According to the specs ATV doesn't even support 480i.
If no one here has a definitive answer I'll try hooking up my ATV to my own 480i 4:3 TV (my non-HD TV) and let you know for sure (but not until Wednesday as tomorrow I have other things I need to do).
I just got my Apple TV and I have a 4:3 Samsung TX-T2793H (27" CRT) and everything looks great. I haven't tried low def though. Just 720p and 1080i. It seems to me like everything just sort of works.
Before buying I was worried about how it would crop stuff and about the frame rate and resolution of itunes content. All those concerns are gone now though. Guess I've been spoiled by hi def.
Although not blessed by Apple, 480i does work as long as you use component inputs. Mine does not show 480i as an option, but when my friend bought an Apple TV and plugged it into his Sony CRT, 480i showed up in the list of possible outputs.
