Lost iPod, no copy of serial number

How did you purchase it?

I dont know if Apple logs serial numbers at point of sale at their stores. I know when you buy stuff like Game Boys, the serial and barcode of the actual device used to be displayed through the back of the package.

*Does anyone know if when you register it with Apple if it is possible they register the serial number.*
The only reason you register it is fo the serial number.

Navigate to your home directory and then into the Library -> Preferences. From there, open com.apple.iPod.plist with a text editor and then look under the Devices heading. You will see a long string; click that and you will find all the details of your iPod, including the serial number.

I've got a similar issue. My ipod was stolen and I can't distinguish a serial number. I have the original receipt from Best Buy but the numbers on it don't look like the other serial numbers I've seen. I'd like to see if I can find the serial number on itunes. I have no idea how to locate a home directory. I've already tried to recover the serial number, unfortunately the last ipod used was not the one that was stolen. Can anyone help me?

i'm facing the same problem.
ipod got stolen and i require serial number for my police report.

tried running the UPLOAD SERIAL NUMBER OF MY LAST CONNECTED IPOD, and got the same error message.
tried using the "preference" but unable to locate devide tab. i'm using vers 7.3.1.3
