Lock Mail Folder or Mailbox?

Greetings! Is it possible to "lock" or password encrypt a folder or mailbox in the OS X Mail app? I have a folder called Archives in which I store various important emails that I would like to lock or at least encrypt with a password to open. Any help?

Thanks & God Bless!

Rick,

Not at the level you mean. However, with any portable, you should require the use of your system password to even log onto your, or any, User Account. In OSX, the limitation is placed at the login and User Account level. The same can be done for your Desktop Mac.

If anyone else is permitted to use your Mac, set up a different User Account for them, and they can never access any of your mail folder, but can access the applications.

I also have wanted this type of feature for a loooooong time. Not sure why without even your mail password someone can still see your entire mailbox. All someone without the password can't do is get new or send. Would be very helpful if Mail had a password required to even view the mailboxes. Seems like a no brainer to me.

You might try sending Apple a note on this using their feedback system. Maybe if more people request this feature we just might get it. 🙂

Lenn,

Your Home folder is in fact your personal User Directory. Anything in it is fair game for anyone using the Mac as YOU. This goes for Mail, Documents, Photos, etc.

While I keep my Desktop Macs set to login as me when I start them up, I keep my portable set to require a password to log into any User Accounts. Protects my data if someone steals it -- they won't be able to use it, in all probability. My wife and daughter, who sometimes borrow it, have their own User Accounts, but that is more to customize the Dock for each of them.
