Ringtone Volume

I tried out the ringtones feature last night, and after I figured out how everything worked, it did. However, I was sorely disappointed with the volume level that was created in the ringtone.

I spent a few minutes selecting the portion of the song I wanted to use (instrumental portion), and specifically selected portions with high pitched sounds that I should be able to hear just fine when the iPhone rang from within my belt holster. It sounded perfect on my Mac. However, after I created the ringtone, and synched it to my iPhone, I was sorely disappointed to find that it was so soft as to be unusable.

What's disappointing is that Apple clearly knows that ringtones need to be louder to be useful. The default ringtones on the iPhone are clear and loud on the iPhone's tiny speaker, however limited they may otherwise be. Since user created ringtones are uneditable, and there was no option to adjust the volume in the creation of the ringtone anyway, I probably won't be creating any more.

There needs to be a way to try out your ringtone creations on your iPhone before committing your payment, since there's no correlation between how it sounds on your Mac and on your iPhone.

I agree. I downloaded two ringtones the other day and when my phone rings, I can barely hear it. So I had to go back to the default ringer.

I wonder if it has to do with the audio quality of the song from iTunes. Didn't they just increase the audio quality on songs - the ones that are now $1.29? The songs I turned into ringtones were the $.99 ones. But I don't have any $1.29 songs that are available as ringtones yet.

I have the same problem. I will never buy another ringtone from iTunes again. Volume is way too low, and I've tried it with two different songs.
I think it's annoying that Apple put these stupid default ringtones on the phone (they all either sound completely ridiculous, embarrassing, or childish), none of which are really loud enough to begin with, and then prevents owners from putting proper ringtones on the phone themselves (sounds they can create, or edit, or boost the volume on themselves). Then Apple offers this ringtones store, but they're not at all loud enough either...in fact they're quieter than the ringtones that came with the phone. So you just wind up throwing your away your money, because you don't realize how bad the volume of your newly purchased ring tone is until after it's been paid for and put on the phone.
Four dollars is all I'll throw away (2 ringtones of 2 songs that I only bought to make them ringtones!) The iTunes ringtones are useless. I suggest you guys stay clear of them, too.
Apple: If you're reading these posts, I sincerely hope you move REAL quick in addressing the problem of iPhone volume. If you can't do anything, at least let iPhone owners have the power to do something about the problem themselves by letting us put our own sounds/alerts on the phone. Alerts/Ringers that are easier to notice, and grab our attention better. Alerts/ringers we can modify, boost the volume on, etc. before we move them to our phones.

I agree 100% I wish Apple would just address the volume problem instaed of saying most or some iPhone's have no volume problem. They won't even acknowledge that there IS a problem! I held off as long as I could (because I love my iPhone) but now that the 1st major update 1.1.1 is out and DID NOT fix the volume problem I have a 3:40 appointment at the Apple store today. I really need to have a phone I can hear! I miss calls & the voicemail speaker playback is useless.
Please Apple just address the problem and say that some 1st generation iPhones have a hardware issue with low volume that can not be fixed. Then I can decide if I want to live with it (as I have now for 3 months) or I'll just sell my iPhone for what I can and wait for a hardware fixed iPhone2. Why do they want us to wait for a fix that may NEVER happen? If Apple could fix it why was it not in updates?

My experience is that different songs have different ringtone volumes. I've bought 2 so far (Winning by Santana, and Heartbreaker by the Stones)." Winning" clearly rings louder, which is a little strange because "Heartbreaker" is a real rocker. I have to say, however, that I haven't had any real big volume issues on the phone at all. Certainly no issue that hasn't been present on each of the half dozen or so cell phones that I've owned.
