AEBS 802.11n, Crashing while using bittorrent

Hi, I have recently purchased an AEBS 802.11n (gigabyte ed. and using the 7.2.1 firmware) and am experiencing some problems using bittorrent.

First off, I use azureus for my torrents, and with my former linksys router I had no issues. However since purchasing the AEBS I have tried multiple torrents now, and seemingly randomly during the transfer I loose wired/wireless connectivity to my router and am unable to restore it. When looking at the actual base station though the status light is still green, but going through my mbp the device will not appear when I scan for base stations. The only way to fix this problem is to unplug/replug the router.

This happened with the first AEBS and thinking it may be an error with the actual router, I returned it. However, after unpacking the new one, configuring it... I am having the exact same issue. I haven't experienced the router crashing any other times outside of using bittorrent, so I am unable to pinpoint whether this is something random or not. However it is almost a sure bet that letting azureus run for a few minutes will crash it. Furthermore upon restarting the router, all of its logs seem to clear so I can't even begin to troubleshoot this.

I can't see how a $60 linksys router is able to outperform this very nice offering from apple, and I really would like to see this problem fixed. I hope this doesn't come down to tweaking some rare setting in the bittorrent client as I have many people that use my network weekly and it will be an increasable pain to take them through some unique setup which should not be required.

If anyone has any ideas let me know, I am fairly competition with computers and networking issues and willing to do whatever is needed to fix this. Thanks in advance.

It may be a data handling problem rather than a torrent problem per se. I've seen it happen when using Azureus and when not.

I also have the same problem - 2 routers, every so often they just die and need to be re-powered.

It's really important that as many people as possible who have this issue report it to Apple ASAP. I've currently got a case open with tier 2 tech support and they could definitely use more data, so please call it in and try to get it escalated.

Hopefully there will be a fix soon.

Best of luck.

I'm using Azureus 3.0.2.2. However this really shouldn't be an issue of client settings or what not.

The fact of the matter is, I can sit here on my friends $30 d-link, and download from BT just fine, close my laptop, open it at my house, continue downloading/seeding, and almost guarantee a crash... with the exact same settings. Furthermore how can I expect anyone on my network to dig through their respective clients settings just to use my network, and the first time someone forgets... poof router/network locked.

This is definitely a problem with the router, however I'm not sure if its a firmware or hardware issue. Hopefully this is a bug that they will be able to fix, if not the AEBS is going straight back.

I still haven't had a chance to call apple on the matter, as I am away on business... I will be returning Monday and hopefully they have some answers.

I know it shouldn't be the bittorrent client that's the issue, but switching from Azureus to Transmission seems to be working just fine for me. With the previous, I'd be up for about 30 minutes, while with the latter I've been up all day.

Come to think of it, I had this problem before I bought the Extreme a few days ago. It was just after I updated Azureus to the latest version did my Express start having troubles. I thought it just was dying, and that's why I got the Extreme. Then with all these troubles, I almost began to suspect it was my iMac that was unable to connect, without considering the new base station.

I really do think it is caused by Azureus. I don't VOIP or do any online gaming that could possibly overload the base station, so hopefully I have my solution.

I found Transmission was a bit better too, but I still experienced a crash - so I decided not to use any torrents to see if that was the cause.

I still experienced crashes though even without running torrents.

I wonder what people who are experiencing this have plugged into the ethernet ports? I had a connection to a VIOP router which I've removed. I also have a USB drive. I'm just trying to find some common factor, so the more info we have here, the better.

Thanks for the info. I hope it stays up for you 🙂

mine crashes primarily when using Azureus, its the only time ive experienced the network stopping and having to reset the router.

heres my set up:

Cable Modem [linksys] > AEBS (newer model) > 1-Ethernet XP PC, 1-Ethernet MacPro (which the airport utility was installed on), 1-Wireless MacBookPro

Running Azureus on the MacPro seems to crash after either being idle for a certain amount of time, i checked my torrent status the file was completed when icame back after let it run overnight and i couldnt connect (even though it was solid green)

i can shut off the macpro without the connection dropping.

BTW, I just got off the phone with Apple Support. They were singularly unhelpful, saying they couldn't treat this as anything but an interference problem until I've systematically tried every single mode/channel permutation -- and if that doesn't work, I should take it to an authorized retailer.

Rajesh, I don't know how you managed to get this escalated. Did you utter any magical phrases that got them away from their script?

Just charm.

I'd call it back in if I were you. Some reps are better than others. The bottom line is if the AEBS locks up and only restarting it fixes it and the Mac will still connect to other networks then the problem is either the AEBS or something it is doing caused by something connected to it. I'd mention that a friend of yours (me) already has the issue with tier2 support and they need all the data they can get.

Best of luck.

PS - I've seen a bit of improvement since I took all the lan cables out of the AEBS and use the external hard drive in journaled mode. Crashing has reduced.

Best of luck.
