repair disc or volume in disc utility?

This is probably a silly question, but I've always wondered whether to select the disc (with all the numbers, etc) or the named volume for repairs/permission repairs, etc when I use Disc Utility. What's the right approach?

If you've only created one partition on the drive, both options are identical with respect to actions which work on the existing volume, so it doesn't matter which you choose. If there are multiple partitions, select the disk to repair only that partition, or the drive to repair all partitions. A function can only be performed on the whole drive if it can be performed on all partitions on that drive.
