Apple Laserwriter 4/600 PS and a PC

I have an Apple LaserWriter 4/600 PS printer that I would like to connect to an IBM T21 laptop running Windows XP Professional. The original printer software is not compatible with the laptop. Does anyone know of a way to make the printer and laptop compatible? Thank you!

Craigwd_2000 has made a good suggestion. The laserWriter 4/600 PS is a Postscript printer, and if you had a Postscript printer driver and a PPD file for that or a similar printer, it should work. BUT...

.. that printer has only an AppleTalk/LocalTalk port. AppleTalk/LocalTalk was a fast, serious Local Network Protocol long before anyone else though that having local networks was a good idea. It runs at 240,000 bits/sec -- way faster than most "regular" serial ports can communicate, and it is more than just plain serial data.

What you really need to run it is a LocalTalk card. But I have the feeling the last ones were made for the ISA Bus. I doubt anyone made one for PCI Bus, and I can't imagine one being made for CardBus.

On a Mac, you can configure AppleTalk to use the Ethernet cabling. It does not interfere with Internet protocol. Then you can use an old Mac or a "stunt box" to convert AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to AppleTalk/LocalTalk.

That certainly is a nice printer. The last one I bought on eBay cost me US$25. For a little bit more, you could probably get one with an Ethernet Interface and LPR/LPD protocol built in.

Thank you Grant Bennet-Alder and Craigwd_2000. XP did not have a driver for the 4/600 PS. I tried the driver for the 16/600(?), but that didn't work. I will be purchasing a new iMac and will try to configure it to the 4/600, but my preference is to connect the Laserwriter to the PC and purchase a new printer for the Mac. Any additional thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

If you have a new Mac available, And broadband Internet, you could create a small network with your PC. If you added a protocol converter, as mentioned in several other threads conecrning printers and especially the 4/600, it would transform that printer into a Mac Network printer, visible to all the Macs on the local Ethernet network. You could then Share that printer with the PC's using Mac Printer sharing, as long as the sharing Mac is on at the time you want to print. From Mac Help:

Sharing your printer with Windows users via SMB/CIFS
You can let Windows computers on your local network use any printer connected to your computer. >You can share both PostScript and non-PostScript printers with Windows users; however, Windows users must always send PostScript print jobs to your computer.

Open System Preferences, click Print & Fax, and then click Sharing.
Select the "Share these printers with other computers" checkbox, and then select the printers you wish to share.
Click Show All, click Sharing, and then click Services.
Select the Windows Sharing checkbox.
To print to your printer, Windows users must configure an SMB/CIFS network printer and use the Postscript printer driver, even if the printer isn't a Postscript printer. Your Mac will translate the Postscript code into code the printer can understand. Have the Windows users see their Windows documentation for information on adding a network printer.

Documents waiting to print on printers you're sharing are stored on your hard disk. (That is, your computer hosts the queue for the printer.)

WIndows users do not see any location information you may have entered for your printer.
