iPod Classic and "Speakers" menu item

I just rreplaced my 30gb Video iPod with a new 80gb iPod Classic. The menu item whic show up when the iPod is connected to my iPod Hi-Fi doesn't seem to show up (backlight always on, album art, speaker tone, etc.)

I realize Apple is discontinuing to Speakers, but I am fairly certain I will not be the only person to continue using them so wish it was still available as menu item for loyal users.

Or... am I missing something and is there for other users?

Update: Plugged it in while it was on the Settings menu and lo and behold: it added an iPod HiFi submenu (they must have been using other speakers).

But it still won't work on my 2008 BMW iPod controller.

I've tried the suggestions on this page - there is no way to bring up the Speakers or Always on menu for the Classic 160 GB.

However, when you plug it into the Hi-Fi I notice that the volume limiter menu disappears.

It is therefore clear that the Classic and the Hi-Fi can and do communicate with each other. It would seem that Apple has failed to implement the other features because it can't or couldn't be bothered.

don't know if any of you saw my other post about the "bug" but if you go into coverflow with the classic docked on the hi-fi, you're able to control it with the remote. once you select a album however you have to go all the way through it to get back to cover flow but it's a VERY cool thing. apple could make all of us hi-fi people apple lovers by allowing up to navigate a bit more like this with the classic and our hi-fi.

i still say the hi-fi should have controls like front row!

Nice work Deggie!

I tried this tactic with my wife's new nano i.e. plug it in on the Settings menu. it definitely realises that it's been plugged in- certain Settings options like 'audiobooks' disappear when it is docked on the iPod Hi-Fi, but alas no 'speakers' menu or anything similar.

There is a 'small speakers' option in the EQ menu- but it still doesn't get around the cover art and backlight options.

deggie, from iLounge.com:

"The only other Settings menu options iPod touch has are almost secrets: iPod Hi-Fi and Speakers. Unlike past iPods, which display these options as new main menu choices when iPod Hi-Fi or certain speakers such as Bowers and Wilkins’ Zeppelin are connected, iPod touch hides them under Settings—a change introduced in iPhone. I was planning on picking up a 160 classic for Christmas and give my current 60gb 5th gen to a family member, but if I can't get the full features from my Hi-Fi (which I use often), I'll probably not upgrade. Seems silly not to add the speaker setting and full album art features (which can't be that difficult to add via firmware) just because the Hi-Fi didn't meet expectations and Apple is discontinuing it. I'm sure there are a lot of Hi-Fi owners that are happy with the unit (myself included) and feel a bit disappointed that they won't get the same functionality from future devices they had previously. After all, Apple does like us to upgrade to the latest and greatest. Also, I've seen conflicting reports that the speaker settings are working for some people and not others. Can anyone confirm that the Hi-Fi settings do not appear with the new 1.0.1 firmware update (i.e. docking it with the settings menu displayed shows the speaker menu)?
