Just got my iPod Touch this afternoon. Was very excited and immediately started testing everything on it. However, I was very disappointed with the way it displays blacks and dark images in video and photos. A friend's iPhone didn't seem to have this problem. Saw a thread in the iPhone forums where someone complained and another person said theirs looked great. Did I get a bad unit? Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks for replies.
Same issue with me. I went to my local apple store, and they were reluctant to admit a problem or to claim any knowledge on the issue. They seemed coached to me as to how to respond to the specific situation. It wasn't until he went back to "talk to the manager" that he would exchange my ipod. A few pieces of advice.... Be persistent - they're not going to make it easy on you. I don't believe them when they say they are unaware of a problem. Also, use "The Scientist" video by Coldplay (either on You Tube or downloaded) to show them the problem. The second half of this video looks laughably bad. Also, keep in mind the store's lighting. When I went and showed them, it wasn't as bad as it was at home. I didn't figure it out till later that the effect is much worse in low light than in bright store lighting.
My friend returned his yesterday and the guy goes "Ohh were not aware of that problem" he goes "So I guess you didnt see the Fuc*&^$ 39000 view thread in your forums" They were less than amused but still took it back. This happened in NYC.
Im holding out till im 100% sure the problems solved!
I received my pre-ordered Touch on Friday 9/21 and am happy with it; no screen or audio issues on a week 37 unit. I only wish the viewing angle was a bit better. Stats:
I used the macro mode on my camera and shot in a dark environment. You can make out the individual pixels on the screen - unfortunately you can also see a faint outline of the camera's reflection.
It shouldn't even be about employees reading this. It should be about responsibility. This should be coming from top down to every single person who works as a "genius". Obviously this problem is widespread enough to warrant telling your employees about it.
Seems like a real drag that Apple has not put any real statement out about this and we are having to search out solutions on rumor-filled message boards.
Just checking in to see if Apple has made any sort of official announcement yet.
I really would like to replace my Touch with one that has a good screen... but there's so much speculation, rumor and possibly good/possibly bad information floating around that I think I'll wait until there's something concrete announced.
Am I a fool for thinking Apple will address the issue directly?
I returned mine today with no hastle except the soho store where i returned it being sold out and me having to go to the fifth avenue store instead
all of the employees seemed to know about the screen issue and he barely glanced at the machine before he took it back
the guy at 5th avenue did try to give me a week 37 with corrine bailey rae but i made sure i got a macy gray week 38
the new screen is GORGEOUS
the difference is so crazy i couldn't quite believe my own eyes
thank god i returned it
So I've had my second iPod touch for a few days now, and at first it seemed OK, but I've just done some more testing today with a variety of images and videos, and although the problem isn't as bad as the first one, there's still something requiring me to tilt the iPod away from me in order to see all the details in a dark image. No major "negatives" like before, but a definite lack of definition in the dark tones. It is certainly not as crisp as some of the images I've seen posted of "good ones".
So it's going back to Best Buy, and I'll give it one more try.
For the record, mine is:
Week: 38 (9C738T...)
Box: Corrine Bailey Rae
So I think that despite my earlier statements in these forums, there may be some chance that some of the early week 38s are slightly affected by the issue... As least some of them in the Corrine Bailey Rae (CBR) boxes, anyway.
My advice: Avoid CBR boxes and get a Macy Gray box if you can, as long as it's week 38 or beyond.
I'll note again that the issue is significantly less in this one than in my first one. I only noticed it with some dark test images (the horse picture really showed the lack of definition in dark colors) and slight negative blacks show up in the tests with several black/grey boxes.
I'll report back once I find one with Macy on the front, and let you know if this is all in my head, or if I'm really not being too picky and there was a legitimate issue.
I'm off to the Apple Store in Bethesda (Montgomery Mall) this afternoon to try to exchange two 16 GB Week 37s. I will let everyone know how it goes. Also, if anyone has experience exchanging at this store, please post.
I would have thought that after a full day, every day of Apple products the fanboy/girlishness might have worn away. As hard and inexplicable as that may seem.
Ok I have been very active on this board saying we should demand a perfect product. Yesterday I went ahead and got an I-Touch(week 38, Macy Gray box) and everything seems to be perfect for what it is. It's well known that LCD screens can't render rich blacks so just keep in mind that blacks won't ever be pure blacks on the I-Touch screen. I have a great computer monitor with a high contrast ratio and that's exactly what the I-Touch lacks in my opinion. Blacks will always have this "lit" appearance on LCD with low contrast ratios. It's a matter of getting used to it.
One thing to remember though... You high-contrast monitor is not a cutting-edge touch screen. I'm not sure any of us know what is the highest performance attainable by the newest touch screens. Kind of apples to oranges comparing it to your monitor.
