Jam Packs won't install

I had done a full install of LS8, and in the middle of Jam Pack 1 disk, it prompted me to reinsert the main install disk and re-install.

I retried, just choosing the Jam Pack content, and it failed again. I'm afraid I have a bad disk. Is there anything else I should check?

If it is a bad disk, how do I go about replacing?

I am having this problem as well. The main apps installed okay, but the presets seem to be missing a lot of files. By individually selecting each Jam Pack/instrument set a couple of things took (Xtreme Analog and Remix Tools) but the others eventually ask for the primary disk and report errors on install.

I read something elsewhere about the DVD drive in MBPs not being able to read some disk content - is this true? If so, how do we go about getting replacement disks?

Well, here's what did not work and how I solved it.

I was pretty sure that there was trouble reading the disc, as /var/log/install.log showed such lines as

BomFileError 5: Input/output error - ./Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/Trombones/Trombones stac_mf1/PO-3_stac_mf1D3.wav

I contacted the tech support over the phone. They told me (1) that they can't ship replacement discs right now, and (2) that I should make an image with Disk Utility, mount it and launch the LS8 installer asking it to install only the missing Jam Pack. (In my case, that was Jam Pack Content 2: the Orchestal stuff.)

Unfortunately, using Disk Utility failed in the same way – displaying an Input/Output error halfway through the disc.

Here's what worked: I put the disc into another machine, made an image from there and mounted it on the MacBook. For the record: it was a Linux machine with a Pioneer DVR-110D drive, I used the command "cat /dev/dvd > jampack2.iso", I shared the directory over AFP and mounted it remotely on the MacBook. However, any kind of machine and software with a different drive might work (e.g. a Windows box with Nero, or a Mac with another model of DVD drive…), and it would have been equally good to copy the whole image on the local hard disk and mount it from there.

After mounting the image, I launched the installer, selected the missing Pack and it worked smoothly.

I'll try to get replacements anyway, though. 🙂

I had the experience, when loading Logic, of the install cr@pping out about a disc into the jam pax.

So I first did a custom install of just Logic/Mainstage/Waveburner, then went back and installed the content in separate ops.

I still get some weird little glitches -- sometimes preset guitar tones aren't available, and I get the "error -41" message but all in all works very well. I figure they'll address the bugs via software update.

Chronic2,

the way I understand it is this: some drives have trouble reading some particular discs, for reasons that I would not be able to explain, either. It would seem that some SuperDrive units cannot read properly the JamPack 2 DVD.

This is not exactly what happens to a scratched/damaged disc. I've happened to deal with damaged CD's that most drives would not digest, but my old Plextor unit – after slowing down and trying harder – would be able to read. So, I copied them onto new ones and went on. In contrast, I cannot read the JamPack 2 DVD on the MacBook (the operation fails with an I/O error) but I could read the whole disc very quickly and without any errors in a Pioneer drive.

I suppose it could be some kind of issue with the SuperDrive, rather than the disc, but I wouldn't be able to tell.

HTH!

hey guys...
exact same prob here..on disc 2 of the jam packs. i rang apple and, as someone else here said, they dont have replacement discs in stock yet, but they guy said he'd let me know and send them out when he does.

the only problem im having is in opening certain preset or orchestral software instrument. for example, the orchestral template at start up basically cant find anything....a bit annoying, just hoping and presuming the replacement dics will sort it out...
