Well, the menus are a WHOLE lot snappier to me, even though I didn't think this was that much of an issue before, but with this update this should be a non-issue for most, I would guess. It's still a litlle slow going backwards to the top menus, but still not that bad. iTunes syncing is still a lot slower, although I don't have a problem with crashes and freezes in iTuns or the iPod itself, and the update worked correctly the first time. I think maybe I just got one of the good batch of the Classics.

It THINK the sound quality is better, although it's early morning and I'm not sure my ears have woken up yet. 🙂 I did a blind A/B test using the same song and headphones with my 5G iPod, and I was having more trouble guessing which was the Classic and which was the 5G - with the 1.0 firmware I could tell every time. The sound now seems to have more spatial width and seperation, and not as ambient and muddy. This is just from about 15 minutes listening, so it could be a phony result. I'd be embarassed if in fact Apple didn't make any changes to the sound in this update, he he. The volume is still much lower than the 5G, though.

Same thing happened to me. Tried downloading the update, but it wouldn't install and kept giving me the 1430 error, but in my case it told me to restore. So, after restoring and then moving my library over again, it works. The classic does seem to have a treble boost. It is almost like the default eq is very scooped.

"Everything is indeed so much faster. There is very little lag when accessing the menus, plus one song after another plays instantly even in the shuffle mode. I noticed that when the update was downloading it was a 56.6 MB file as I remember. That certainly is no small update!"

That update probably includes software for ten models!

In any case, I am glad that some of you are seeing improvements.

I decided not to wait, and ordered a 5.5G iPod 80GB, as I have dockable accessories and AV-out issues as well.

Just to add:

No improvememt for Apple's camera-connector - still not working!
Same with Belkin's Microphone

Contacts with photos still crash the iPod

But faster menus. Unfortunately not usable in alphabetical order.

Thanks for this info! My Classic has already been picked up for "return-to-sender", so reports as yours are my only way of knowing when it's "safe to buy another one again". Seems it's not that time yet. Well, Apple's loss, not mine...

Poor piece of work....

The iPod? Aw, that was rather nice and sleek (i'm owning the iPod Photo, and the Classic is a huge improvement in terms of form factor). The firmware? For a 0.0.1 version increment (and how long? A week? Two?), at least some good came out of it...

I've not given up on the Classic yet 🙂
