About hard drive cameras I suggest you to read this thread: Warning - do not buy a DVD or HDD camcorder if you want to edit !

As far as I know iMovie 08 adds some flexibility in the camcorder choice, but in my opinion the principles in that thread are still valid.

you'll be struggling to buy any HD cam for 1.5K,

i think you are better getting a 3ccd chipped MiniDV camera (canon, sony or panasonic)
and learn how to use the camera, and mastering the editing

I would suggest you post on the imovie forum to gain some info from people using this camera with imovie 08, which has only recently added AVCHD (the format of the SR1) support to see how the workflow shapes up.

I have used a Sony HDR-HC1 for 1 1/2 years for vacation videos with both Final Cut Pro and iMovie with great results. The video looks great on an HD TV set, and it can be converted to SD and burned on a DVD with iDVD where it looks great too. I think the Sony HDR-HC7 is the latest version of my camera. It's $1250 at B&H Video. I'm very happy with it. I use regular DV tape, and I wouldn't use a hard drive or DVD camcorder for video that I planned to edit with a Mac.

I have a Sony SR1 HHD camera and from all the documentation I have read, it is not currently compatible with iMovie HD or Final Cut applications.

you should have a look at the Canon hv20, wich sell for less than $900 in the US, and has got some very good review, since it is HDV it is well supported by Imovie and FCE.
