Sep 16, 2007 1:55 PM in response to Eustace Mendisby John from NOLA,Thanks for your response, but I did connect it properly; as a matter of fact, I connected it two ways, one with a patch cable and the second through a router; neither worked. I am not sure if the ethernet part is working. How can I verify it? -

I tested my Ethernet port on my Wallstreet once using this method:
1. Boot to your 9.x MacOS CD. This CD does have networking software so that a System Folder can be installed remotely.
2. Since the boot System Folder on the CD does not have an Apple System Profiler, go to the System Folder on your HD > Apple Menu Items and launch the ASP. It will work fine since it is just an application.
Using the above setup on my Wallstreet, I get this report:
There is no mention of Ethernet anywhere, just LocalTalk; first line under Network Overview is LocalTalk (printer) built-in with 3 n/a(s)
If I now just connect the crossover cable to my running iBook, then restart to the CD and open the ASP, Ethernet built-in is listed in place of LocalTalk, plus...
Active network port(s) : Ethernet built-in
This network, This node, and Hardware Address all have numbers.
If you still get no reported Ethernet from a pristine boot CD, then your Ethernet hardware may have failed. -

Do you mean to say that you need not have anything connected to this crossover cable, just the cable?
Should this cable be connected to another Mac?
Should you also try a straight cable connected to your Switch and observe the "port active" or similar lights at the Switch? -

I guess I was less than clear. I did this a few years ago, but I think I got it right though poorly explained.
When the Wallstreet is booted to the CD (use the CD, at least in his case, for a clean OS) and without any network connection, the ASP should show no Ethernet info. I then connected a crossover cable from my Wallstreet to my running iBook; I cannot recall if I had any File Sharing set up on the iBook. I guess it is possible that if you relaunch the ASP on the Wallstreet at this point, the Ethernet info might appear; I just said to restart the Wallstreet to the CD again, then open the ASP.
If you would like, I could try this procedure again to see if I get the same results.
